23i Fuel Consumption / Mileage

Hi All,

For 23i drivers out there, I am interested in what mileage you are getting either:
1) On a quarter tank or
2) On a full tank (based on dash estimates or even end to end)

I think quarter tank may be easier.
i.e. reset mileage at any quarter tank/half/three quarter/full tank mark and measure distance until next quarter tank mark.

Not interested in the MPG values on the dash for the moment as that depends on driving style.

I ask because i am running on a replacement ECU at the moment, 18" wheels (Goodyear F1 Assym 5's) and getting 50miles per quarter tank / ~200 miles per full tank.

Most of my driving is in Sport mode.

Hi, that’s not going to give an accurate comparison as the gauge isn’t linear-mine doesn’t move at all until 70 or 80miles have passed.
Best way is full tank till near empty, then brim it again & note the fuel used, there’s no ambiguity then
200 miles on a tank sounds pretty bad, i used to get 400 easily from my old 3.0si. Don’t think it ever went below 300? :?

Thanks for the reply Rob,

I understand it's not the best way to gauge / estimate consumption. Not interested in anything too scientific.
Also can't ask others to do a brim to brim estimate as they may not be doing the mileage.

With mine it's quite consistant from any quarter tank to any quarter tank. The dashboard estimate is also around 214 miles for a full tank.
I can literally see my wallet draining.

Every so often, when driving, i go "OUCH".
Wifey asks "What's the matter?"
I reply: "Just felt another hit to my wallet in my backside pocket"

I suspect it is to do with that replacement ECU.
I am going to get the old ECU reflashed - probably this weekend
... IF it's warm and IF i can bother to get my ar*se out of bed early enough and IF there's no rugby or football on to distract me.
:D :D :D

Definitely something wrong if you really are only getting 200 miles per tank.

Thanks Tiglon!

Yup definitely something wrong.
I never bothered to monitor my fuel consumption before on that car as it is what it is and "no use worrying".
But this seems Lambo-like ridiculousness.

Mines a different car being a 20i, but a 23i shouldn’t be miles away - my display after a recent road trip showing over 520miles estimated range :?

This is mine 23i

Right Now

If your only getting 200 miles in a full tank yes there’s an issue there somewhere

I assume E89s have the same size 55 litre tank as E85/86s, in which case I'd be horrified at 200 miles to a tank. :o

My MC will show just over 300 miles range when I've brimmed it, but my 30.0Sis would be nearer to 400!

55 Litres is correct! (i think)
I should be driving an RS6, Gallardo or similar.
(That may or may not be exaggeration... I haven't driven a Gallardo yet)

The only way to tell what your true mpg is, is to fill the tank to the brim, then drive some, then fill it to the brim again. Amount of miles driven divided by fuel used gives consumption.
Quarter of a tank is at best a guess and the range on the display is fantasy. I can drive my (or any) car down a 10 mile road at 55 mph and the range will have gone up by at least 15 miles at the end.

I had a Merc once that I had to put the space-saver on as had a puncture when leaving for home. I drove 120 miles home mainly up the M1 at 50mph constant. By the time I got home, the computer said I had more fuel than when I left! :o

I plugged in my Foxwell obd reader.
One section said adaptive reset..so did. Brake and some other warnings came up, like reduced power mode.
I then recycled ignition and car then seemed way more responsive.

Urban driving might only give 25mpg.
My 50/50 urban/countryside giving 30mpg.

I can take a look at our 23i although, like others, I’d be back in the market if I was getting 200 to a tank. I had a quantum remap and it doesn’t seem to have caused any thirst issues whilst giving some mid range improvements and smoothness (I don’t think I’m imagining it, but I’m no techy). The car hasn’t been back out of winter hibernation for long so may need a few weeks to determine it’s love of go-juice

I have been doing exactly what Rob has said since I purchased my 23i 18 months ago - just under 35mpg and at the las fill up, car showed 360miles to empty

Yes I am a sad

In that case I am too!

I keep an Excel spreadsheet and both of my 3.0Sis averaged around 32/33mpg in the 5+ years I had them. But to be fair they were both weekend cars so were never sat in stop/start rush hour traffic thankfully. :)

First time I have done it and mine is mostly motorway / decent A-roads so get good mpg but just look at how fuel has shifted in the last few month - bloody frightening if only getting 200 miles from a tank, mine quite regularly shows over 400 on a motorway

Not enough cells in Excel for you buddy and being in finance, I am sure if you did that and saw the fuel you are burins through, you would be buying a diesel astra
