23i - Boat feel / response - Comfort Mode or Boat Mode?

So, the 23i in Comfort Mode feels like a boat.

I don't mind it very much except for one aspect = when entering roundabouts.
It takes forever to take off and I get the impression someone will run into the side of me whilst doing so.

Hence I mostly/always drive in Sport mode.

Anyone else in the same situation?

Perhaps try a couple redex shots, or STP fuel system cleaner.

Haha! :D :D :D
I think i did ask about terraclean but was quickly shot down.

I will try some Forte or Liqui Moly.

But more interested to hear if other 23i owners have the same or better experience.

What’s this comfort mode you speak of? :poke:

First thing I did when I got into my 23i was press sports :driving:
'tis what I do by default! :) :)

Except when default sometimes fails :x :x

Sports mode should have been called City Mode.
Normal should have been termed Cruisin Mode.

And the other one.. Well... track mode or stupid mode or over coffeed mode.

I always press to sport straight away, in fact i was going to wire a relay to pulse the switch so it does it automatically power comes to the cigar socket.
Normal mode with the soft throttle response is a waste.
I wish steering response could be set separately, but country lanes it needs sport to make it more stable.
It's definitely not a car that you drive as though on auto pilot.

And if you want to get around a junction quick, needs sport+, otherwise traction kicks in slowing things down.

You can buy an expensive box that improves the aggressiveness / speed of throttle response…

A real techy can code it to do the same..sadly beyond my pay grade.

Is it a manual?

OK. I've explored multiple options.
On the 23i, there is not much to be had in terms of bhp gain (probably 14-23bhp) depending on who one believes.
But would gain around 20Nm of torque.

If this improves response on the lower end as suggested by others in other threads on this forum, then I'm happy because that's what I'm after.

So I've invested in a powergate master & slave kit.
That way I don't have to be beholden to a particular map or mapping company and I can create & deliver my own maps as well, and I can reverse them.

All ordered, hopefully applied & tested next week.
Only problem is the car is SORN at the moment, so it will have to be some private road testing.

It's automatic. I will look into seeing if I can get a transmission remap done as well. That's next step.

xHP works on the 6HP boxes fitted to the 23i and 30i…improves shift times from 600ms to about 100ms plus other options.. :driving:

That would be nice, but I don't see it listed for the 23i.

Perhaps I've misunderstood, but it doesn't sound like max power or torque is your problem, it's the way the transmission and/or throttle pedal are setup.

I had a similar car, but manual, so much easier to compensate for the delay. Not very helpful, sorry...

The 30i is listed box is the same..there are some complex things going on in these boxes so maybe they didn’t think it was worth it..best ping them a request ..

They were pretty quick in getting back to me.
Basically, if it's not on the list then it's not supported.
So that's out of the question now.

Anyway, just got notification that my remap equipment is being delivered today. 3 days earlier than expected. So I will have the map installed on the Z tomorrow, all things going well.

I had the same issue on my 20i MSport auto with the ZF 8HP box..loads of BMW N20 powered cars listed but not the E89s...

will be interested in how it feels to you with the re-map.. :tumbleweed:

There was a bit of a delay as i had few minor problems.
1) I had a problem decrypting the original file so that it could be edited. I went around in circles with this for a good while trying to avoid checksum errors.
2) Then the bad weather hit and my battery went below 12V, so i had to connect the charger and wait for things to improve.
3) Retried the read of the file and decyption, but same problem.

The trouble is that each read of this ECU takes approx 1hr10mins. So that's a lot of waiting around if i have to redo it.

4) Eventually discovered it was an incorrect file on my PC, causing the checksum validation to fail ... :x :x

Anyway, the ECU file is now decrypted, checksum verified and in the process of modification.
Battery is still charging, going to let it go overnight to get to max so that it's 100% for the writing process.

Should be able to apply the remap tomorrow (Tuesday) and then comment on improvement.

However, there are a few things to consider:
1) These ECU's learn over time and adjust accordingly
2) The transmission learns your driving style over time - i had reset the learning a few months ago, so will have to do this again

Then will have to check over time on the overall improvement.
However, it's in hibernation at the moment until the summer so these last two bits may take some time.

Did you get your car tested on a rolling road so you can verify any improvement from the remap?

HAHA...Rob....
No!!

I don't expect much from a 23i non-turbo 2.5L NASP etc.

My only interest is in the lower end where there isn't enough OOMPH! in normal mode.

This "should" provide:
- an extra 20HP - no big deal
- an extra 20nm of torque - i'm hoping this is on the lower end

With the 23i a rolling road is not required IMHO.

It's all subjective at this stage.
In Ireland, on Irish roads, it takes a LOT to get that engine onto the upper end of the rev range to make a difference. I do that, but not often enough.
I'm trying to make it more lively on the lower end, with a bit more lower end torque and hence a better experience and without resorting to the Sport button for closer drives.

I think that if i feel there is a difference i will revert back to stock & rolling road on both ... just to satisfy myself!

Right now i am just documenting my journey for other 23i owners out there.

NOW... i DID mention via youtube a few exhaust replacements to my wife. She liked the Eisenmann at €1890 but seemed to be in love with the Remus at €890 and was willing to contribute a few hundred to that!

What does the forum think?

I get that, but pre & post engine testing is the only way to find out what’s really happening with the power curve
