23i - adding the comfort package?

Hi all,

I did a search but big apologies if this has already been covered. :poke:

I recently fell in love with the Z4 and I'm looking at 23i's due to insurance and such reasons. I test drove my first at the weekend (loved it) but I looked like a bit of a plonker fliddling with the keys for 5 minutes trying to open the roof before getting in the car. :headbang:

Turns out this is one of the options that comes with the Comfort Package!

Has anyone had a quote for how much it costs to add this package post-purchase??

Many thanks

You should be able to open the roof with the key, the comfort pack adds putting the roof up with the key. However adding a comfort pack will be very costly and what you need is a smart top. That will give you roof open and closing with the key whilst yiu also do other things like open the door and it will also enable you to put the roof up and down under around 28mph but its programable.

You should be able to open the roof with the key on all packages. Comfort access would let you open the doors only with out key. But at £545 I thought it was ott. Have it in our 640 it's good but not £545 good :D

Comfort pack is different to comfort access. The roof will not close with comfort pack. It includes extended lighting, storage, parking sensors, cruise control and electric folding mirrors.

:( oh must have been something wrong with that particular car

I just did a quick google search for a z4 23i smart top but it came up with videos followed by not very useful websites. :tumbleweed:

That there were no used car sale listings is quite telling. And being a poor man I have no choice but to try and find whatever I can in the used sections.. so no funky roof for me :?

I found that the comfort pack is often not listed as part of the spec of a used car. The clues might lie in the stuff you get (per post by RoyE above). If you find a used car with all of those, chances are it's got the comfort pack. If it's an approved used, the sales person can look it up, even if it's not listed as such on the website.

Comfort access is 'keyless' access, ie you just walk up to the car and it unlocks.

Seems to be correct, just tried it. Mine has the pack, roof opens with key, not closes.

I dont suppose you had a door open while trying to lower the roof?
I dont think it will work like that.
As far as I know it wont work if the cars battery is low on power either.

I also found that if you briefly let go of the key button whilst opening, the roof freezes and won't restart with the key. Need to use the button inside the car

The doors and boot etc. were closed and I tried all the buttons, and then again holding each for 5/6 seconds.

But this was just a test drive (the car in question sold before I even arrived back from the drive). My main priority is for my used Z4 hunting;

A) how to identify used vehicles that have these features; common terms or means of identifying them. This is mostly answered thank you.

B) the feasibility of adding these features. The above suggests this will need an entirely different roof (smart-top), door and maybe some other clever wiring?

Thank you all for the quick responses - I'd rather talk about Z's all day than work..

Smart top is an aftermarket addon.

I don't have it but others do, It's a DIY installation for the non-timid owner...

Interesting! It doesn't say how much the box costs?...

Google Shopping is your friend:

Hang about, so which button do I hold down to open the roof whilst I am on my sofa?

Cheers, will be trying tomorrow as long as it's dry.

I think the issue may have been that the tray for the roof to be lowered into was not down properly. Ideally next time check the boot and ensure that the compartment is down and is engaged. It can look down but isn't actually clicked in so either push down in it to make sure or lift it and ensure it goes back down and goes click into the catches.

As for the roof going down, I've come out of my office to find my roof down in the company car park because one of the lads had been playing with my keys! Luckily it was a nice day and no birds had decided to bomb it!
