224s on runflats

...so no, you cannot fit runflats to 224s - the rim of the tyre is too thick, and fitters won't fit them even if they could.
 
Thanks all - I didn't think so and wanted to check. and knew a group of people on here would know
 
I run my original Bridgestone RFT's on my 224's. I contacted Bridgestone for advice before I did and was told that they WOULD still function as run flats. I did post a thread about it giving Bridgestone's reply...ill see if I can find it

I don,t see how as there is no 2nd ridge on the inside of 224,s for the runflat to sit on when punctured ?
 
Here was Bridgestone reply to my question "can you mount RFT tyres on rims not designed for runflats ie M wheels"

Their answer was as follows

"Hello, It really depends on what type of TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) your vehicle has. If it has ABS based sensors (which calculate any discrepancy in rolling circumference to determine a pressure loss) then you can use the RFTs on those rims. If your vehicle has tyre valve sensors (which actively monitor the internal tyre pressure and alert when a penetration is detected) then you cannot use the RFTs on these rims (as the valve sensors would be absent)
If the latter is true then we would strongly recommend against using RFT tyres as if a puncture occurs you would be unaware that it had happened (without the valve sensors you would receive no notification of pressure loss) Continuing to drive on the tyres beyond their designed capability (50 miles @ 50 mph) would eventually result in tyre failure" Kind regards BSUK TECH DEPT

As our cars use the ABS system it will still detect rolling circumference change and trigger the monitoring system

I know you wouldnt want to run RFTs but I just wanted the official answer! And Ive got 4 very good RFTs to use up!

Must admit though it tramlines like a pig :rofl:

Switch your fronts to non Rf & tramlining will cease then set about wearing out the rears :thumbsup:
 
I'm afraid that although Bridgestone say the monitoring system will still work that don't commit themselves to say whether the 50mph for 50 miles bit is still valid. I believe that as long as the tpms still works then that's all that matters. I mean, at least you'd know you had a flat. Must admit though I'm desperate for non RFT's as it handles awful :(

Well I'm surprised - all the advice / guidance I have seen is that runflat tyres should not be fitted to non-runflat rims... And that tyre fitters won't do it. I wouldn't do it on that basis, but fair enough if you can.
 
The runflat rims are only the same as standard but with a 2nd lower ridge , No hardship in fitting the tyres to them at all , just need a decent set of spoons & some fairy liquid :P
 
Fitting is not the issue though, from what's said above. I thought the issue was also that if the tyre deflates the lack of a full size second ridge means the tyre could come off, especially at speed. I did a lot of reading up on tis but it was a long time ago and my memory is hazy. I'll see if I can find what I found...

If youv'e ever seen them fitting/removing runflats i doubt they would ever come off :o the hard sidewall makes them a pig to deal with

Its not so much coming off, more they can move inside the rim. The big lip inside is meant to keep the tyre against the rim if it deflates.

Personally i would not run rft tyres on non rft rims. Also if you were to do this check your insurance comany is happy.
