224's on a 3.0 ** Now with Picture

Last night I started changing my ellipsoids over to a nice set of 224s which I've been looking to do for ages. Unfortunately half way through it started hammering it down with rain so only 2 wheels have been changed (pics to follow once all 4 are done). My only concern is that they sit a few millimetres out from the rear arch. They currently have 255 section tyres on them and I know changing them to 245s will reduce the overhang slightly but would like to know if there are any other ways to reduce it. I like that they fill the arches better than the ellipsoids but if anything they fill them a bit too much! I'm a little concerned the arches will run when cornering or going over bumps as they are.

I have 224's with standard m tyres and no issues for me :) I do get the occasional slight rub if the car is fully loaded and there is a dip in the road but otherwise all is fine.

If they have the standard ///M tyres on they are also a higher profile than your original ones.

Good to hear there isn't much rubbing. In terms of looks I'd still like to bring them in slightly but it could be that a tyre change will be enough. I'm looking forward to actually driving it - I've gone from run-flats to non-RFs so hoping the ride will be a bit nicer too

When my tyres are shot i will be changing to the original Z4 sizes where possible.

225 40 18 Front
255 35 18 Rear

If i decide i want to go supersports i will have to change the rears to

245 35 18

as they dont make them in 255 35 18 :(

X2

Got to fit standard tyres,

Mine were fine with the standard 255/35 tyre, even with my car being lowered on H&Rs springs,

Sitting a little higher now with my KWs :)

My old 3ltr in my signatture pic had 224's on. Standard Z4M size tyre, and lowered on Eibachs iirc. No rubbing, and i loved them on it!

It's certainly a matter of opinion, I know plenty of people would love to have the wheels poking out a bit. I'll live with it for now and see if I get used to it, personally I would prefer them to be slightly narrower, just enough for them to fit under the arches. They definitely look better than the ellipsoids though.

Are you lowered? If not, lowering the car will bring the tops of the tyres in a little, as the camber changes.

Not yet no. I'm slowly making changes to the car as I go and new springs are on the list. I've just changed the wheels over and have a 325mm brake kit which will be going on when I next get some time. Once that's sorted I'll give it a little while and decide whether to go lower or not. It's still a daily driver so I don't want to ruin the comfort. I've heard mixed reviews of Eibachs - some say it's no less comfortable others saying it is so I'm not rushing in to that one yet.

I'm lowered on eibachs and the ride isn't really any harsher than standard. I'm on 19's too, with rubber band tyres

Good to know. I finally got the wheels all sorted and had a 4 wheel alignment done yesterday. The combination of non-RFs and corrected alignment have resulted in a much better drive. The car crashes a lot less over bumps and there's no trace of tramlining anymore. The wheels don't stick out as much as I first thought either, very pleased.
