As the Subject mentions, i'm having mine refurbished in a few weeks and the guy asked me if i wanted a black paint base before a silver paint covering or just plain Silver. Apparently Z4's come with either.

I've not heard of this before, i thought it should just be a silver base - surely?

Anyone come across this before, the black base is £15 more per wheel.

Standard is Silve, but there are a couple running round with black/silver combo.

SammyZ for starters.

Not a huge fan myself, prefer the standard silver.

Srhutch, that's not what Base paint is.

Black Base paint will make the final finish darker than a silver finish. A bit like shadow chrome.

I know what a black base is, just assumed that was the finish the op was talking about. Either way 224's were never done on a black base as I said before.

Ok, no problem, just wanted to make sure the OP wasn't confused.

Only reason I know is because the wheel refurb guy asked me exactly the same question when I got a quote to have my 19's done. He said the black gives a deeper and darker finish that will show off any concave lines etc better, whereas the silver won't.

Personally I like the 224's as standard, so silver Base would be perfectly fine. It would also mean any light stone chips wouldn't stand out as much as they would with a black Base.
