2013 Scotland Meets - Planning and Discussion Thread

Ok, so there's been lots of chit chat about this years meets, but now I'm beginning to think about next year.

This year so far we've had Tayside and Moffat. On the cards is the Applecross meet, and possibly others.

My thoughts are we kick off discussions about routes and meet dates here, which can then be turned into proper individual meet threads when we've agreed what we're doing and when. Sound good?

Just to be clear, although the thread is titled "Scotland Meets", that's because the routes will be in Scotland. All forum members are welcome.

I organised a February meet this year, and would be happy to do the same next year, but with a different route. I'll keep updating this post as the ideas come in.

Planned meets:

1. Tayside Meet - February

For the February meet this year, I would be really happy to incorporate the A93 Braemar Road. Even if it's simply a drive up to Banchory and back down again.

I think Jaxz4 was also looking at doing one which would incorporate that road as well, not sure though, who ever does it I am there, it is a great road as goes down as a Must do road for me.

Slow day at work Adam? :D

Christ, we're not even a third of the way through 2012 yet and you're talking about 2013?!! :poke:

Sorry to divert but surely we've got time to sort out another weekender meet later on in 2012? End-Aug/start-Sept time? Who's organising that?

Just putting the feelers out Ally. Yeah, bit of a slow day at work

Keen to pencil in some dates as I know we're all mad for it, and it helps if we can get as much prior notice as possible, given that some folks need to plan days off work and the likes.

Plus I was feeling a little inspired by the A93 drive I did on Tuesday :)

I am determind to get to Scotland for a meet. This is my pledge.

We're not having a holiday this year for a few reasons, so if it was mid to end of August (possibly the very first weekend in September, though rugby starts again then), I could combine it with either dropping Wee Bing off for a couple of weeks with his grandad, or picking him up at the end.

Be flying solo, but tbh that's going to last till he's old enough to be trusted in the house on his own... Which will be about 2022 at current rates of behavioural development

Bank holiday last weekend in August though :(

So, I am in for this year at the end of summer if it flies, and will keep an eye out for next year

Gonna have months of meets - May, June, July x2, and now maybe this. Ace :driving:

Just to be clear guys, this is a thread to discuss possible routes and dates. And generally bounce ideas about. Not trying to sign up anyone at this stage :)

The North East/Scotland meet-up was planned for Sept, might be best to turn that into a weekender?

Being from the North, I've always been tempted to head home going all the way up the West Coast. Would float that one out as a suggestion - up past Torridon, Ullapool, then towards Durness and Cape Wrath (if the MOD aren't out playing with their toys), then back down. It would be a lot of driving, couple of different campsites.

Or looking on the map for places that we've not already covered, how about down the Tarbert/Cambeltown peninsula from Lochgilphead?

We've covered Skye, Jura & Applecross. Tayside, Oban, Biggar/Pentlands, Ayr.

Mull would be another suggestion?

Too late, already there :P

However in the interests of doing as I am told, and assuming you'll accept dates for this year, w/ends of 19th, 25th August, or 1st Sept. I'll shut up now as you lot are the route experts :D

I really really really really really really really really really really really really want to. 500 miles is a helluva trip to a start point though

Gonna happen, I am watching

Some roads for thought, and purely from experience this year...

A93 Braemar
Cairn O'Mount Road
Slug Road Stonehaven
Dalveen Pass (is this the A702 one from the Moffat meet?)

Also, what was that roller coaster road that a11y took us on last October, would be good to do that one again

Just for a second there I thought you were about to burst into song,

"and I would drive 500 miles and I would drive 500 more
Just to be the guy who drove a 1,00 miles to by your side....."

Is it get my coat time... :?

Here's a suggestion Bing, You know what dates you can make it up here....Why don't you organise a meet surrounding your dates and see what interest you get....
Just a thought mate

Good idea, problem is not having driven any decent meet type roads in Scotland for years it'd probably be a crap route. However, Google Earth could be my friend :?

A dry run might be problematic

Even if you can confirm some dates I'm sure we can find a route for the occasion?

Applecross

However, as I can't make that, How about the west coast, but south-ish. I liked the Oban suggestion, so how about something like...

Begin at Stirling, though we can start a mini convoy at Nosa's :D
Up through the Trossachs, possibly taking in Loch Lomond :?
Over to Oban
Ferry to Jura, down to Islay
Distillery followed by beer and sleep
Ferry to Kenacraig, down to Campbeltown and back up the other side through Carradale to Tarbert, then on to Inverary and home

I have no idea how long all of that I'll take or how far it is, but I've never been further on that route than Oban (may not even have ever driven along Loch Lomond, can't remember...), and as far as I can figure it's taking in some beautiful places you guys haven't ever been en masse. Coupe of ferris, one of which is a reasonably log crossing looking at it, but what do you think ?
