2011 Z4 parking brake light

Hi All

I am new to Z4 ownership. The car has the dreaded orange warning light on for the parking brake. The battery was the original and I have had that replaced as it was only showing 11.8 volts. Reading the forum suggests that it would need the software update for the handbrake module. I took it to my local independent German car specialist who wanted £96 to do a diagnostic check. I did this. They have come back saying that there is a line 1 fault, and that there are no updates needed to the software. They have quoted 500.40 to investigate the wiring and fit a new switch if needed. The handbrake operates perfectly, just a daft light on the dashboard! I am not 100% certain the garage know what they are doing, as wherever you search it says if the battery goes bad the handbrake module software will need updating. Not too sure what to do next?

Thanks in advance for any help offered

You need to take it to an E89 Indy..the parking brake foibles were pretty unique to the E89..

There can be CAN data bus errors as well / instead off..

Its labour intensive solving those issues..

No simple easy solution on these sorts of issues..only needs one dodgy connection or rogue ECU and all sorts of apparently unconnected things happen.

Hence an E89 guru is your best solution..

What is a line 1 fault?

We have said here many times invest in a good obd reader, even if you yourself can't fix.
Then take that info to indy.

I think only time i had a brake warning light was one of the ebrake motors was failing.
My Foxwell NT530 obd reader said low voltage at one motor.
Turned out water got in and rusted the motor.
Fitted new motor about £30.

This is the paperwork they gave to me at the garage (hope it attaches ok). The cheap OBD I have throws nothing up. The code that the car gives me is CC-ID 410. I have been under the car on stands and the handbrake operates as it should, just the silly light! As everything works and it is well documented that a bad battery causes the light to come on it must be that. I just think that the garage door not understand that this is an issue on the e89?

And i did replace ambient temp. sensor, coincidence it was faulty.
Perhaps only thrown up when possibly system trying comparing to ebrake motor temp.?

Aside from the known software bug, as @flybobbie said, the temperature sensors in the EMF motors can suffer from corrosion.

Unfortunately, the error code/message does not indicate which of these two motors is defective. I bought a used one on eBay so I could test it by trial and error: there is a 50% chance of identifying the faulty EMF motor on the first try. Replace it with the spare part and check if the error is resolved. If not, the 2nd EMF motor must be replaced with the 1st EMF motor that has just been dismantled.

The defective motor was cut open:

Good to know..the motors can be picked up pretty cheap new anyway..non OE

Inside of my cars faulty unit.

I think if approaching 100k miles treat as something that needs replacing, cheap enough.

Same time i replaced the cylinder seals. I think some brake fluid and water leaked into motor.
