2011 E89 Z4 23i Manual - harsh start-up sound, any ideas? (with video)

My 2011 E89 Z4 23i briefly makes a harsh sound when starting up - generally only the first time I start it up after a day or more of no use. I've recorded a video of the sound and linked it below.

If I continuously turn it off and start it up it will keep making the noise, though after running for a little while it won't. So could be engine-temp related but I don't have enough mechanical knowledge. MOT'd 7 months ago and all service warnings etc. are green.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Had that same noise but my Zed was under warranty at that point. BMW just replaced the whole starter motor IIRC. Don't know if it that was overkill or not though (maybe less labour to replace it rather than clean it idk)

Starter bendix sticking in mesh, take off and clean.
Agreed, if you clean it doint lubricate it with anything, clutch dust will stick to the lubricant and jam it all up again. Bendix also has a small spring that might be broken, go for a reconditioned starter if you can find one.......

It is ok, my Z4 (E85 2.5i) is sitting under the cover, and now when the temperature goes lower than 0C, I have the similar sound, but I don't drive the car all the time, I occasionally turn him on just to go to the working temperature, every 4-5 days.

During summer, I didn't hear it, so it is because of sitting out on the cold.
