2009 E86 Rear Parking Sensors

I have just purchased a 3.0si coupe with manual gearbox - the rear parking sensors though do not work. When engaging reverse it makes a longish beep of around 2-3 seconds then nothing.

I did google the problem at the time but I was in the middle of viewing the car and trying to scroll through a small smart phone screen so I couldn't spend ages pulling it all apart. I read something about 'checking for clicking' but we couldn't hear anything. We checked the fuse and that looked fine. He had polished the car and there looked like polish residue around the edges of the sensors.

Is this a common problem? I would imagine there is a module that controls the four sensors? Or is there a way of testing the sensors?
 
Bump on this. Anyone got any ideas? FB was useful for finding out some checks which I have followed. I checked the sensors and all four are ticking when I listen to them. I have bought two replacement PDCs trying them both, neither made any difference.

Any ideas?
 
It's not uncommon for the sensors to fail. As you say, you can usually diagnose a faulty sensor by ear. A faulty sensor will be silent or quieter than the others.

If that doesn't help, check for fault codes from the PDC module.
 
If you're buying a code reader to diagnose this, confirm it can read the PDC module and not just the generic engine fault codes.
 
I have found the Creator 310+ very good. There is a PDC module in the “Body” menu, so I assume that it has that functionality although I have not tested it.
 
I have a Creator 310+ it should be capable of reading all modules fitted to the car mine came shipped with version 11.9 on it, I used the supplied update software to download their newest version 12.1 to the scanner plugged into my laptop. The newest version added a Battery Registration Icon to thre main menu. Worth noting that although Transport Mode appears as a menu item it is not functional when selected, I suspect it may become functional on future updates. If you ever need to reset Transport Mode I can confirm that the laptop based diagnostics BMW Scanner 1.4 can be used to reset Transport Mode.
I would add that the Creator 310+ reset an airbag code that I self inflicted which neither BMW INPA or BMW Scanner 1.4 couldnt clear for some reason, the code was from the passenger Satellite module in my case.
Not sure if there are any differences between the 310+ and their 410 models looks like the same software on both to me.
I also see they show a C501 Scanner listed as the 2022 update to C110 and C310 scanners but more expensive at £78.99.
Pleased with my 310+ capabilities on both my Z3 and Z4 cars, its more portable than getting the laptop out when I need to scan the cars.
