Looks like it has corroded through from the outside, so needing replaced. Any suggestions on where we can get a replacement? Garage tried the usual spots with no luck so happy just to buy from BMW but none in the UK and BMW Europe saying it may be up to 2 months

Bmw part number is 11137553164

Anyone track me down a second hand one or know if there is an equivalent 3 series part that would fit?

help appreciated - no :driving: and guaranteed sun now till the parts arrive....

I've been in the same situation myself (2.5 si as well). Here's my story:

I spent ages scouring ebay, contacting breakers etc. to no avail. To the best of my knowledge, no other model of Zed or BMW in general shares this sump design.
BMW Rybrook in Shrewsbury got one for me in a matter of days, but that was pre Brexit and pre Covid.

Good luck,
Robert.

Here are a couple of photos of the old sump showing the corrosion around the oil level sensor orifice. So the oil leakage was getting worse as time went by. I plan to get it repaired at some point.

Correction, I got the sump last year during Covid but it was before Brexit had kicked in proper.

This seems to be getting quite a common problem with the N52 engined models - I remember someone else having a leaking sump last year on a 3.0Si.

Good luck getting it sorted OP.

I'm just relieved the sump for the Z4 is exclusive to the Z4 - hopefully my 330i won't have the same issue!

Rust cleaned off, cracks drilled out and liquid metal sealed, leave it over the weekend to check it all dries and doesn't leak, should last till the new part arrives. See it it is worth swpping the engine mounts over while they have the engine lifted to fit the sump back on.

That was I. I managed to source an aftermarket aluminium sump to replace mine.

Yes, I know - I remember the trail your car was dropping when you left Newlands Corner. :o

But I didn't say that in case you didn't want to share that too widely.

Having this exact problem! Albeit mine isnt leaking the sump bolt has stripped and I cant change the oil. Apparently BMW are out of stock worldwide. Have tried 2-3 garages now and they cant even estimate a restock date! There are aluminum sumps available although I'm cautious about shelling out £250.00 on something that might not fit. Thinking I might just buy a topsider oil extractor and seal the bung up with liquid metal for now until I can get one.

That sounds like a plan, but assuming you have an N52 engine with no dipstick I'm not sure if an oil extractor would work. :?

You could fit a helicoil insert & repair your sump

Yes my first thought was just to drill out and re tap for a larger sump bolt. The garage seemed to think they couldn't remove the old sump plug. Id be fairly happy to give it ago but I'm worried if I do manage to the old sump out and cant repair it the car will be stuck on the drive for a while. I suppose either way its no going to be moving far! Thanks Rob

Update: Fixed in late December with the new sump and sensor unit fitted £800, seems reasonable as it isn't easy to get to and parts were £650, checked the engine mounts and other bits while the engine was lifted but everything else looked good. :)
