2008 new John Cooper Works MINI COOPER S

Breaker

Elite
Sounds a quick car! If it's better than the supercharged one I had, we had better watch out on the roads!!! :P

I loved my Cooper "S" with upgraded SC, but it still was not enough power to the ground. So I went with the Z4M and haven't looked back, since the handling is comparable (except for that rear/front wheel drive difference), but the Z has the power and controllability that outdoes the MINI.

Yeah it's nice and pretty quick too, but two problems for me - getting all that power down with our roads/climate will be extremely difficult, and the price, well you'll need £25k for a nicely specced one, and that's just too much. I'd rather have a 130i 3 door for that kind of cash, and at least you can't see it when you're driving it (the 130 that is).

Mike, as far as getting the power down its a doddle with some of the claims made by journalists completely miss the mark, so gawd knows what they'll make of the forthcoming Focus RS. It is a fantastically quick little car (straight out of the box) and wouldn't be embarrassed by the Z4M on a cross country run and like the M you can turn off the nannytronics and have some fun - the only problem being its an ASBO motor - you can't help caning it, so hopefully I'll keep my licence clean. Criticisms? Packaging is as appalling as ever and as you pointed out the price is a bit steep but then it is really well put together but like the Z4M let down by some cheap plastics where its obvious the bean counters got their way but I have to say its better than a 135i at that price point. In fact, once I started speccing a 135i it ended up closer to £40k and that didn't look like value for money!

My dauhter's just picked up a highly specced facelift Cooper S with the full JCW bodykit on it.

Tremendous car and for an everyday drive I think I prefer it to seeking the extra few horses of the tweaked engine. No slouch as she left a Lotus Elise for dead in a 45mph+ drag up a dual carriageway last week :)

^^^ Are you sure the Elise was trying? I always thought these cars were fast but I though more like a tad faster than a Civic Type-R fast?

Yes - the Lotus belongs to her botfriend and he's a Lotus series driver!!! He could not keep up when they both hit the gas in the mid range. I guess it's the mid range power band when the Mini's turbo cuts in Vs the need to scream the Lotus to make it go. He was embarassed by it.
