My horns have stopped working. Fuses good. I can also hear the relay clicking in the glovebox when i press the Steering wheel centre, so assuming it is the horns themselves.

Are they easy to replece? Can I fit cheaper/better horns than std BMW (expensive ) parts?

very easy :D

you can access them via the access holes in the front wheel arches. I just bought mine from the dealer - actually soper's in lincoln as they give us a good rate - just mention the forum.

Assume that means wheel off to gain access?

Lincoln BMW quoted £30 + VAT for each horn! Must be cheaper options?

no need to take the wheel off, just turn the wheel full lock to give you the access you need

just found my invoice from January this year - £26.03 + VAT = 31.24 delivered (that for one)

2 new horns from Soper BMW Lincoln - £62. Replaced them in 10 minutes and working fine. Thanks for the help from the forum.

My only concern is that both horns failed in less than 10,000 miles of driving. Are they situated in a particularly vulnerable place, or are they just badly waterproofed?

10k :o

mine failed (and only the one) about year ago ~50k...

STOP using the horn so much :poke: :driving:

I have never needed a new horn on either of my Z4's...236 on my 2003 and just went over 50k on my 2007

i have only ever used my horn half a dozen times, i have only ever used it to pip people i know as i drive past them, still 1 horn was gone, it only made a quiet sound so i realised 1 of the horns was faulty, apparently it is a commonish problem

yes 2 - it was news to me as well, MOT advisory "one of two horns not working"...

one either side in front of the front wheels.

On my UK E85 car, high note horn (not working) on offside, low note on nearside, relay low current (switching side) fuse No 14, high current (load side) fuse No 37.
Triple air horns fitted today in nearside behind bumper all through access hatch.
Takes me back to my Twenties when I fitted them to all my cars, and they should last longer than OEM.

There are 2? I think i'm down to 1

Sounds more girly than the horn on my 3 series...

No wonder my son says my horn sounds wimpy... Didn't show on the MOT my car just had before I bought it though... :headbang:

Gonna have to stay girlie for a while though as Mrs Bing has declared that this forum is now having too visible an effect on both our bank balance and our conversation

Sorry for reactivating a 2.5 year old thread... but it is sort-of appropriate since the car in question was previously under the careful ownership of Bing, the poster directly above!

So... I think of of the dual tone horn units is not working - certainly the horn sounds a bit weedy, and with a trip to Italy on the cards (where the horn might get plenty of exercise...) I think I might try to sort it out - plus it gives me an excuse to tinker with the new car! I need to double check, but I think it is the low-tone unit on the nearside that doesn't work.

My questions are:

i) Does anyone have any thoughts on what type of replacement to order - are the third party horns ok (eg http://www.mister-auto.co.uk/en/horn/bolk-bol-c111001_g297_a999BOL-C111001.html) or am I better off getting an OEM one - and if so, where should I source it from? (I've seen reference to Sopers in Lincoln - are they particularly good?) Presumably the wiring connections will be identical on the OEM but not necessarily on the third party ones?

ii) Is the access ok through the wheel arch hatch to do the replacement? I've seen reference to taking the bumper off as another way to do this, but I'm a bit scared to do this in case I can't ever get it back on quite right :?

Well this is embarrassing

Sorry about that, perhaps I can redeem myself a little...

The one I got is identical to this :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-B...Car+Make:BMW|Plat_Gen:E46&hash=item43c7ad1f78

From a 3 series, but is the same part. I think it was slightly newer than that though.

If you want to get a new one from Sopers Lincoln - and obviously second hand isn't ace if that's the one that's failed... - then the part number is number 1 (low tone) in this diagram :

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BU52&mospid=49303&btnr=61_1621&hg=61&fg=40

Ignore the price as none of the prices on there are accurate, always higher. Sopers will give you a 10% discount if you ask for Mark in parts and mention the forum, delivery is free.

Access is through the lower inspection hatch - it's easier to get into if you turn the wheel outwards. There's enough space to see and get in there with a spanner.

FWIW getting the bumper off and back on again is easy - if you ever need to then I'll happily help

Unsurprisingly Mrs B's attitude to this forum hasn't changed in two and a half years

Cheers Bing  - will perhaps give Sopers a call and see what they'll charge. Do you recall how the wiring attaches - is it some kind of connector which just unclips?
