2007 Z4 3.0 Roadster Impressions

So my Z4MC went into the dealership on Thursday to sort out a dash lighting issue (turned out to be a loose connection) and while it was in I was given a 2007 3.0 Z4 Sport Auto Roadster. Now no offense to the Roadster owners...but I have never been interested in the convertible at all. I have always felt its looks were very odd and out of proportion, the soft top a bit girly and the idea of a silver, automatic convertible did not fill me with joy. However I was soon to change my mind.

My first surprise was the gearbox. I have driven plenty of autos and nearly went for a 335i Auto, but ultimately have never bought one (unless you count an M3 SMG) - I have always been manual all the way. However the gearbox on this was so good it made me seriously reconsider on a daily driver. Obviously you need a manual for your weekend trip to the 'Ring, but every day? I am not so sure. Not only was it incredibly smooth but kick down was prompt and the steptronic useful when you want to give it some welly. Last week my left foot was incredibly achey after 2 hours of crawling from Tower Bridge to Richmond at 4MPH in the M...in this, it would have been a breeze....

The engine? Well again, smooth is not the word. I test drove a Z4 3.0 Coupe before the M so i knew it was good, but living with it for a few days I discovered just how nice it is. It reminds me a lot of my old 330Ci, i.e its incredibly refined, makes a great noise and is quick. I think this is the 265BHP model? It has all the performance you could want in 80% of situations, but is much easier to drive than the M which demands that you grab it by the scruff of the neck and treat it rough. Its much smoother and of course lacks some of the urgency and drama, but it still sounds brilliant and has plenty of go.

Of course the top has to be down at all times (I was once told if you drive your soft top with the roof up, the storm outside better have a name) despite it being pretty cold at the moment - if its not raining, roof goes down - and it adds a whole other dimension to the driving experience. I really really enjoyed driving it.

Downsides? Plastic on plastic scuttle shake from where the roof meets the windscreen on a car with 770 miles on it seemed a bit wrong, and as mentioned I am just not keen on the styling - especially in this cars silver with silver/black two tone leather. Just was not me. Also it wasn't much better on fuel than my M; about 2-3MPG in it from what I could see. But that gearbox and that engine in a convertible setting really makes for a fantastic combination, and I can now see why so much of the press say the 3.0 car is, in many ways, a better day to day proposition than the M.

Would I swap? Not a chance :)

great writeup mike! On your downside comment: I have no rattles or wind noise whatsoever on my roadster. That sounds like something that needs adjusting and quite fixable.
On my NJ/PA trip, I got stuck in awful Delaware Bridge and D.C. traffic and my clutch knee was sore after 2 or 3 hours of this, so I can appreciate what you're saying. I don't know that I'd drive a manual tranny on a daily basis in that kind of traffic. Would probably use a very economical auto.

Actually sounds like you drove the 215 HP model unless it was the 3.0si model.

Only the 3.0si has the 265 HP (255 HP US Models)

Interesting write up. I run the 3.0i roadster with the auto and was restricted in my purchase choice to auto by a wife (suggested to be in my own best interests...lol) who also wants to use it and of course oft wonder about the difference of manual Vs auto.

I think your 80% covers it nicely. Who wants to crawl along in UK rush hour traffic with the left leg working a heavy clutch, but given that odd trip on the perfect and empty road then the manual has a real upside.

I have had few car that were not manual but those few times when I have been stuck in heavy traffic the manual can become a real pain.

I was recenyly trapped on Yonge Street near Eaton Centre. Boy it was not fun driving the manual transmission there.

Manual also causes problems on dates

mikedav, great write-up  Don't you think sometimes the ///M is wasted in all that traffic, and you'd be better off with the 3.0/auto combination?

Definitely. If I could regularly drive on these types of roads then a manual would be great. When I drove to Scotland recently, on some of the roads I did miss having a manual for complete control.

My daily commute for the time being is only 6 miles, takes me around 35 mins, and I need to go through 7 roundabouts, 11 sets of lights, 8 pedestrian crossings and 3 speed cameras ... so the auto box rules 8)

great writeup. Agreed on the dates thing, I had fun driving my old g/f around in the truck :?

Too bad she never got to see the Z. Ah well for the better

LOL I know exactly where you mean :) But I found Toronto traffic pretty ok, compared to trying to get out of West London via Embankment / Earls Court on a Friday evening anyway!

Yeah, I really enjoyed the auto 3.0 combination, but I chose the M because

A) Thanks to residual values, its almost the same price per month as a 3.0 Coupe
B) It looks better (IMO) than the 3.0 (quad exhausts, better front bumper and I prefer the leather CF dash)
C) I had an M3 previously and would miss the grunt - its such a great engine

I only run one car at the moment so it has to fulfill both jobs; it may be a pain in traffic but once I open it up down a twisty B road, its grin factor 10 and worth the compromise to me. If I had two cars, I think I would want something like the Z4MC for play and an auto 335i / 335d for day to day.
