2007 new BMW Z4 2.0 owner

Hi guys

Following every cliche there is turning 40 recently I went ahead and bought a 2.0 z4 roadster. Pic Attached.
It only had 49k miles and a FSH so at 3200 quid I thought it was a bargain and I rushed into buying it.

I have some newbie questions however which I hope members do not mind answering:

1) The DTC button and light. If the DTC light is switched on, does that mean DTC is enabled?

2) There is a button to the right of DTC but not sure what it does, pressing it brings up no lights on the dash? (btw no car manual)

3) Past advisory on the MOT from 2018 mentions ESS warming lamp and ABS lamp indicating faults. I notice when driving or breaking that the steering sometimes pulls to one side. The rear brake and discs look like they need a change but should I get the ABS checked in the process?

4) Climate control - hot hair works fine. However when turned on max there is barely enough coming out the vents. The AC button when pressed does not turn on any AC light.

5) Audio system is basic which I knew before buying it, any recommendations to get the headunit replace (i only need bluetooth connection) and a bonus would be if the nav screen can be replaced with a more updated Android type system and connectivity to phones.

Finally for a newbie first time owner of a Z4 and BMW in general. Anything I should watch out for, or change or think about changing immediately?

Thanks
Bobby

Welcome- lovely Z! I’ll try and answer your questions but here’s links to the manuals you need as PDFs as well.
https://www.bmwsections.com/docs/z4/
1. DTC is on all the time as well as DSC if you press it once it disables DTC and of you hold it it disables DSC as well which is basically no aids anymore.
2. This is the run flat tyre pressure reset- press and hold it to initiate reset then drive in a straight line at around 20-30mph.
3. Not sure on this one- but if it seems ok and had an MOT since maybe this is fixed.
4. Might need a re gas.
5.fod a search on here is this is a route you want to follow- plenty of example.
6. Generally not much goes wrong but the 2.0 is known to have issues that the six cylinder cars don’t, particularly with the exhaust manifold cracking if I remember correctly. Other general maintenance is to check roof hole drains.
Once again welcome and happy Zedding. :driving:

Thanks for the link..

on (1) just to confirm if i press it, and DSC light comes on. Does that mean DSC is enabled or not?

on (2) when would I need to do this? I just had a rear tyre replaced yesterday so wondering if I should do this. How long would i need to drive in said straight line

on (5) I did some searches but could only find really old threads nothing useful with links on replacing the nav screen

on (6) hoping with only 49k miles and very clean insides that this i can avoid having to worry about. Roof is mint no leaks but will keep an eye.

Hello and welcome.

(1) I believe the light is a warning to tell you that you've switched it off.

(2) Should reset the tyre monitor whenever you put air in the tyres. (Don't expect the tyre changers to get it spot on, and anyway, they probably didn't check the others?) I don't think it's necessary to drive in a straight line, just for a couple of miles or so. Though it would be sensible to take any corners gently so as not to upset the system while it's trying to calibrate. I believe this works using the ABS sensors and calculates the rolling diameter of the wheel That way, if a tyre loses air it's rolling diameter will change and flag up a problem. Cornering hard may adversely affect the rolling diameter momentarily so could potentially upset the calibration. (not sure this is very likely tbh)

thanks on (1) - i was assuming that would be the case, would be strange if i had to press the DTC button each time

great advice on (2) - going to check the manual link provided on this forum and read more. The guys who changed the tyre definitely did not do this. I am getting new brakes and discs put on all around and ABS checked tomorrow so will get the mechanic to do or do it myself.

thanks - can i ask what did you do for cupholders?

I have to confess, nothing! Cup-holders were a BMW option and mine came with them.

You can buy OEM ones but I seem to remember reading that driver's side ones are no longer available, although they do come up for sale on here now and again. Otherwise maybe a breaker like Quarry Motors might be an option.

"Machine monkey" on here used to make some that fitted under the trim on the centre console and worked well - I bought a pair for my 1st Z4 from someone who was selling his Z4 so they are worth looking out for too.

Here’s the answers from the manual link I sent mate
removed link so does not show everything again.....

I read through and it seems to contradict what was said earlier.
When I start my car the DTC lamp/light is not on.

According to the manual if the light is on, it is activated.
This means I have to remind myself to turn on a "safety feature" everytime i start the car. Really does not make logical sense.

When you turn car on both DTC and DSC are on- or all aids- you can then turn them off one by one- think of as the choices of all aids on, part of the aids off, all of the aids off.
