Personally I'm not sure that you need to, if engine is off then all should be okay, but then I'm no expert. Why not err on the side of caution? :)
It was directed at no one in particular, just wanting to make sure I didn’t cause myself any additional problems/expense. :)

I tested out the one I bought online also and unhooked the battery beforehand.
BMW put a warning sticker on the car so I'd assume its very possible to get electrocuted by accident.
