2007 3.0i automatic transmission warning light coming on

I sold my 2007 3.0i roadster two nights ago. The new owner drove it about 50 miles to her home,....all was good. The next morning, (yesterday) the transmission light came on in her driveway, briefly, then turned off. All was good for the rest of the day. Today, it came back on again. I had just replaced the water pump, coolant thermostat, coolant reservoir, auto trans cooler thermostat and after flushing the cooling system, installed new BMW OE coolant. I had put about 1000 miles on it since doing all that work and no issues. I recommended she check her parking spot for signs of any leaks. Can a standard OBD2 scanner check for transmission faults?

Yes, a Creator 310+ certainly can. Sometimes the transmission light will be triggered by a harsh park. Also the electrical connector to the transmission can get wet and mucky and start to degrade. Unlikely to be related to the work that you’ve done in my opinion.

I had an issue with my transmission light coming on sporadically. Would sometimes 'clunk' into gear on moving off from parked. Light would then go off again for periods. Mine turned out to be the 'gear position sensor switch'(?) Was about £50 from BMW and no issues since it was replaced.

Do you have a part number for that? I can’t find it on RealOEM.

The position switch seems to be only fault we ever hear about on the supposedly unreliable traditional auto boxes.

Hmm OK, that’s a pre-LCI part only. I couldn’t find the equivalent part for the LCI 6-speed box. The part you mention is £175 from Sytners :(

I've had this occasionally. Spring 2024 I had a load of dash lights too so changed the battery. All sorted except the ABS light which went off with use. No gear selector clunk or light since.

So if the battery's old (mine was 5yo), change it, or just use the car regularly and see if it persists/gets worse before anything else imho.

I wouldn't get a generic one. Buy a BMW specific one.

If you still need one you could get for yourself and offer to help or suggest they buy it. But you're going out of your way for sold as seen.
