Hi all,

I've had me z4 for a couple of weeks and I've noticed that it occasionally spits out white smoke on start up.
It happens around 1 in 15 times. It's not a huge cloud but it definitely concerns me.

Any suggestions?

Erik

Blue smoke is normally oil being burnt so you can rule that out
White smoke in normally steam so is probably water being heated and turned into steam
It's probably just a bit of condensation in the exhaust being burnt off during start up
Nothing to worry about

I used to get this sometimes on my old 2.5si. Had the car from new for 4.5 years and 30k. Didn't seem to cause any issues.

Do you ever start the car from cold , leave on tickover for a time then turn off without driving it ?
Or many short journey's without engine + exhaust getting fully hot ?
Are you monitoring coolant level ?

1: No.
2: Yes (try not to do that too often)
3: Yes, it's stable.

(by the way, nice Alfa! :))
