Looking forward assistance my wife drives a 2006 bmw z4 3.0 s.i. 22000 miles always garaged the problem is intermittent.
The car will start intermittently or not when it does it fires right up when it won't start I get lights and power fan etc.sometimes some clicking sometimes not then next try it fires right up.car battery is new and charged I keep hearing it's the key battery I know the battery can be changed I also understand the key battery is rechargeable by the car not sure about that.looking at going to dealer for new key .any thoughts before I go thanks ahead of time

Certainly not the key if you can open the door with the 'blip'. They are rechargeable when driving but even if flat operate the engine.

As above I'd be looking at starter motor and from there check for good connections on it and battery (poor connections often cause odd faults). Although new I'd want to see battery voltages as lights are a lot less draw than starters..

After that even as an 'expert' on fixing cars I have an auto electrician look at it as intermittent faults are so hard to figure out.

You say you have a new battery, was this fitted because you had the problem before or has the problem started since you fitted the new battery??
If so, as has been mentioned already, check the terminals.
May be worth checking the cable connections on the starter motor and giving them a good clean up too.
