2006 bmw z4 - Crank No Start

Or do you think it is worth checking the timing chain? When I have the fuel pump and everything plugged in, the engine only sounds like its spinning the belts. There is no clicking, pulsating, or anything like that.

Wow that’s low! If you are sure you youve done the test correctly I think the next step it to take the head off. More testing is fairly pointless if the compression is that low. I don’t think a head gasket would blow between all six cylinders.

once I take the head off what should I be looking for?

I am assuming I did the test correctly. No fuel pump on, all spark plugs out, one cylinder at a time.

That sounds right.
If it was me I'm not sure I'd even bother, I'd just look for another engine and drop it in. I'd then strip it down just to see whats happened. I'm not sure the cost of repairing it at this stage would be worth it. There is more testing you could do if you really wanted to, a leakdown test or get an endoscope down the plug holes. But if you find anything wrong then engine will need rebuilding anyhow.

I would have thought significant resistance to hand cranking the engine so what you need to do is put a small amount of engine oil in each spark hole and retest compression but think you need to do this with battery cranking. If compression increases this would point to worn bores or piston rings. Otherwise it could be a cylinder head issue .

Ill try this. After this, if there is no compression, I think I will just consider this a wash and a loss. Not really worth spending another $1k dropping in a used engine lol

At the very least you should be able to recoup some cost by selling off parts

Just dropping into say that I actually think it is a timing issue. I took the valve cover off and noticed at TDC that the camshafts QR codes are not aligned. The intake is on the bottom while the exhaust is on top. I am not sure this 100% means the timing is off, but from every video and post I see, those QR codes should be aligned on top at TDC. ALSO I have a cracked camshaft rod bearing (the bracket thing holding the camshaft in place).

Blimey! Something has gone spectacularly wrong! I wonder if it’s sucked in a load of water? Those engines are not known for failing like this.

the previous owner did drive a little while without oil. Also, I got this at auction, so it’s possible that people tried to start the engine multiple times. Maybe with the lack of oil the timing jumped. Not sure but gunna fix that next week and update if it fixed the compression!

Got to admire your perseverance.

I am a real sadist when it comes to fixing faults on my cars and just will not give up but to be brutally honest if a car has been run without oil it is beyond redemption. Put it down to experience and move on.

cant hurt to try! At least then I know that it is totally gone. At the worst, I lose some time. All these tools I can just return to amazon lol.

It indeed was the bad timing. Got her all lined up and she starts!!! She doesn't idle for s**t but now that could be a whole host of other problems like bad fuel, solenoids, etc. :fuelfire:
