2006 Battery fob

Quick question.??

Does the battery in the key fob need replacing as I have read it is rechargeable....how is it recharged?

Strange

If it was rechargeable then I can only think it would be via the ignition.
The little battery itself isn’t one you would remove and recharge. You could likely replace the fob battery with a non rechargeable one if you wanted.
A lot of BMW bikes have keyless ride and you just put the key in your pocket and its proximity to the sensor makes riding possible but they drain more quickly than any traditional key fob immobiliser.
May not help you but I’m sure others will confirm for you.

They charge via induction, when in the ignition

You can cut open the key and replace the battery. Loads of videos and guides

Cheers guys

It pays to now again to use the second key then....

Yep, although if you're not going to use the key, you can allegedly use a toothbrush charger on them too, but I've not really tried it.

I replaced both of mine recently, and if you're confident with a soldering iron, it's really not a bad job. Glueing the case back together neatly is probably the hardest part!

Like all batteries, they lose capacity over time, so if it's only a weekend car, you might find them going flat/having short range as they get older and get charged up less frequently.

But knowing there is a solution if they do stop holding charge is a nice piece of mind!

I am beginning to run into the key fob battery problem, possibly due to age, possibly due to infrequent use (and yes I have fallen into the second key not being used for years trap too).

I know there is talk of using phone chargers and toothbrush chargers, but does anyone definitely know whether this works and what specific chargers they have used? Seems a bit anecdotal somehow...

Failing that any current recommendations for a key refurb? Most of the links I have found seem a bit out of date, and I am not sure I trust myself with a soldering iron these days.

I presume the final option a new, full price, OE key, right?

Thanks!

I should have known better, but I realised recently that I hadn't used my 2nd key for a year or two. So when I was going on Argyll Andy's recent Scottish weekend trip I took my 2nd key.

Sure enough it wouldn't open the car, but as it started fine I used it for 200 or so miles of the trip up. Still nothing, so I used it for 200 miles on the Saturday and while it would unlock the car it wouldn't lock it. Speaking to Bushy that evening he said they need longer than that, so I used it for another 500 miles over the next 2 days. Still OK to use and unlock, but no locking.

Got home and left it on my toothbrush charger for 2 weeks but today it still wouldn't lock the car.

I think I'll live with that because I can still lock it using the key slot on the door lock, although that doesn't set the alarm.

If it gets any worse I may contact these people as I've read positive feedback about their postal service:- https://www.themasterlocksmith.com/

By all accounts much cheaper than BMW!

I did my battery recently. Nothing would wake it up, including the toothbrush charger.
