2006 2.5 Z4 engine misfire

I started my normally very reliable Z4 this morning and within a couple of hundred yards I noticed a slightly unresponsive throttle. After a further mile or two the engine was severely misfiring with the rev counter jumping about like mad. Fortunately I was only a few minutes from home and safety. I lifted the bonnet to see if I could see anything obvious that was causing this but not surprisingly it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. I started the car again and as if by magic the engine ran as smooth as a nut! I took it for a spin ...perfect. I even accelerated quire hard, something I very rarely do and it seemed ok. However, I now feel a little apprehensive about travelling far. The question I suppose is, if I took it into to have the car examined would the mechanic be able to determine what had happened using info stored in the cars computer memory. Im hoping it was just a particle of dirt in an injector but any suggestions would be more than welcome. Many thanks for reading this.

hi, how many miles on the car?

were there any smoke? if yes, what color?

injectors are pretty reliable ones on this engine

Thanks for both replies, no smoke and it's covered 80k. Yes I will take it to the local garage to have it scanned to see if there was an underlying fault but I'm hoping it was a bit of dirt that caused it. Thought it may be as well to have the fuel filter changed...what do you think ?

Could be anything really until you pull some codes and start diagnosing. To me it sounds like your throttlebody is on the way out. I had similar symptoms and replaced mine which fixed the issue.
Your CCV might also be failing. Any idea if it's been replaced. They all fail at some point.
A failing coil pack can also cause these symptoms.

Thanks for the reply Chris, all three sound expensive so, as you say, first port of call is to get it diagnosed and take it from there.
Just strange how its happened once and hasn't repeated itself...as yet!

Hello. You have posted this in the E89 problems, you may get more info in the E85/86 problems section.

I've been advised that I posted this in the wrong section. Apologies if you've already read it, but here goes again...

Geppi, if you state where you are, a local member may be able to read the codes for you. At least you will be one step ahead if you have to take it into the garage.

Hi Zebedee, thanks for that I'm in Swansea, Wales
Isn't that somewhere Colb?
Easy enough to do a search for him on the members list, then send a PM.

OK, so not right next door but definitely worth having a chat.

Hi from me in Newport, South Wales, bit of a trek to get to me for code reading, if you pop over to Zroadster.org you will find a forum member on there mrscalexwho floats between Swansea and Swindon, should have code reading capability for the Z4 and may be able to assit you nearer to home. Probably have to join the forum to get in touch with him by posting on there or pm him once you have enough posts to allow pm's. mrscalex is Rob by the way.
For the Z4 I can reccomend the Creator 310+ code reader available on ebay and Amazon for circa £50, very simple to use and quite powerful with its capabilities. Well worth investing in one.

Hi. I own a 2005 2.5 with 80,000. I had the same problem, and my mechanic said it was the ignition coils. At first, it was similar to your issue, the misfires came and then disappeared, but got progressively worse. I did try some injector cleaner and that didn't help. I changed out 3 coils, one bank, and the problem was gone. Of course, 6 months later it seems to be happening on the other bank. Good news, is that it's a relatively cheap and easy fix. Good luck.

I hope that helps the OP. But now you have posted why not introduce yourself on the Newbies section? If you do just make sure you include a photo of your car though!
