2005 z4 will not crank

Hey guys! I'm actually posting for my neighbor. He has a 2005 Z4 (I know nothing about BMW's). It is having issues cranking. The car runs and drives fine....ever since they got it, its had this issue. You would turn the key and it would not start. If you pressed the clutch pedal in repeatedily you would eventually get it to crank over and start. It has completely failed and will not start now unless you turn the key to the run and jump the solonoid. It will start up just fine. We changed out the clutch switch with a new one and the same thing is happening. I'm not sure what else it could be?
 
Could also be the ignition switch, which is a £10 and 10 minute job.
