Hi folks,
Picked up a Z4 on Tuesday this week, after several months of trawling the usual for sale ads.
2005 E85 Z4 roadster
Sterling grey (Sterling-grau Metallic - 472)
3.0 (M54) approaching 34K
Manual (6 speed)
Chrome Line Interior
Sport seats (black/electric/heated)
No Sat/nav
8 speaker stereo
Wind deflector
I'm based down in the south east, Kent. Collected the car from a private sale in Bournemouth. Nice 150 mile drive home with the roof down for the majority of the journey. Followed up with a shorter trip the day after taking the wife down to the coast for some lunch, letting her have the drive back. So far so good.
I've got 4 BMs currently, an old clapped out 320D E46 which I saved from scrapage 4 years ago for £150, and until recently has had oil changes, and a set of dirt cheap tyres but just keeps on going.
In addition I've got an E63 635D, and another E46 330CI, both of which are grey, space grey for my 6, and silver grey for the coupe. So this kind of meant the Z4 had to be one of the shades of grey, although I was completely open to anything other than plain (titan?) silver or phoenix yellow. I had my eye on a Maldives blue which was a previous club members from my research, a nice sounding Toledo blue with extended champagne leather, and a dirt cheap merlot (3K with 100K). Money no object I'd drop 30K on a Sepang bronze Z4M tomorrow, what a colour, close second the dark green, Oxford?
Anyway, no real plans as such. It's got a couple of niggles, most of which I was aware of pre-purchase, one I've discovered since, all potentially can be resolved.
It come with the almost obligatory style 108s, not to my taste. Bit boring, but I'll keep an eye out for some MV2s for now. Saw a black one for sale a couple of weeks ago on style 95s, looked great, but reading up I'm a bit confused, as the ET sounds completely off, so possibly reps. I might try out my 19" BBS LMs off my 330 out of curiosity from both looks and ride.
Also, possibly a little controversial, I might swap in my E46 steering wheel, as it's chunky, leather, and has both audio and cruise control built in. With the thought of getting a tidy E46 M3 wheel permanently, being even chunkier, than the 330s. I moved my M3 on last year, and other than the engine, the wheel is something I really liked, seats were good too, for the record, it wasn't grey, had a carbon black coupe.
I'd like to update the front end with some non-amber headlights at some stage, and clear side repeaters on the wings. Maybe a set of black kidneys.
So on to the current issues. Roof motor is still in the original location, works, was replaced in 2015 according to the history, but I'd like to relocate it to the boot.
Control arm bushes have slight play, or words to that effect on the last MOT back in May, so unless there's any better suggestions, I'll stick on a set of Meyle HD arms, probably poly the bushes, and a set of droplinks and tierods. It tramlines, but I think this is more to do with the interesting combination of run flats on the front and proper, albeit budget, tyres in the rear.
Brake light in the boot lid is cracked, so will need replacing, probably going to stick with red, and a set of the updated springs, but the washers no longer seem to be available.
Drivers seat memory doesn't work, so can't save my settings, but the current ones can be called up, might have been ok if I were 5 foot tall. Discovered this after the purchase, but hardly a deal breaker.
Passenger heated seat doesn't work, just flashes then goes off. Been like it since 2013, there's a receipt for a diagnosis from the previous owner, garage concluded the heating element to be faulty, this could be fun to resolve. I'll do my own digging before I attempt to pull the seat apart to fit a new set of pads.
Poorly repaired scratch on the front wing, and a couple of dents that look like someone with extremely strong fingers has poked the car. Hoping a mobile PDR guy can fix those for a reasonable price. Have considered trying myself with a PDR kit, but they are small and would rather they stay than I make a complete mess, I guess I could practice on the 320D.
Driver's interior door handle has marks on the chrome look material. I'd like to replace these. I'm actually really liking the chrome dash and gear surround, obviously hard to tell from pictures, but I assumed it to be some sort of wrap, like the handles, but unless I'm missing something, actual metal, and if possible I'd like proper metal handles to match. I was all set to hunt down at set in piano black.
Apologies for the long intro, I'm intending to use this as a reference point for my car, as I make changes, progress, etc.
Any comments, questions, suggestions, I'm all ears.
Here's some photos, but a photographer I am not.
Cheers Rog
