2005 3.0 flashing red roof light

Tell the dealer they are bullsh*tting you. That is standard motor trade fob off talk. Ask to speak to the General Manager and demand they fix it.Dealer sales staff don't want any post delivery repairs on cars as it's cost goes against the salesman's commission,so he'll try his hardest to fob you off and hope you go away.Be polite but persistant, you'll get it fixed in the end.Threaten them with trading standards if they get difficult, and make sure you DO contact trading standards. It doesn't sound like a major issue and they should fix it.

NEVER threaten - advise them if necessary you will be contacting Trading Standards. Always weakens your case in a County Court if the dealer says that you went in threatening them however legitimate it may seem. Hope it gets sorted.Link im my signature with advice of dealing with Dealers - you might find useful.

Just to clarify, it's not a BMW dealer.

Cassie - doesn't matter. Sale of goods act covers any seller of goods... They are a car dealer, and should be selling you a car that is mechanically sound. As AlanJ says, don't threaten, but be polite and insistent, and if they continue to refuse then actually go to trading standards.

Before everyone goes off half cocked, this issue may resolve itself with repeated use. The hood could have been up for a long time, let's be sure it's folding right first. Then, with repeated lowering, with some final assistance, it may start locking on it's own. Hey, it might be just too cold and stiff.

This is a common issue, and the reason they did away with the latch on facelift models.

Cassie, you should at least find where your dealer stands on covering this issue, as it was a pre-existing problem on delivery, but don't get too insistent until you are sure there's really a problem.

The hood probably did work fine when the dealer prepped the car for sale. The problem developed when the hood stayed up for long periods and the weather got colder.

Having my mechanic look at it tomorrow before I phone the dealer back. I just realised that pushing down on the hood once it's closed only makes the light go out temporarily.

Will let you know what I find out.

Just a quick update... My normal mechanic looked at it and thought it could be a faulty micro switch, but said a BMW specialist would have to give a definitive answer. I fed this back to the dealer who then offered to get their mechanic to fix it, so that's what's happening right now :) I'm supposed to pick the car up later today and fingers crossed all will be well! Thy said they'd also get the Bluetooth passkey for me :)

Well, I'm extremely pleased to say it's all fixed! They said it just needed some adjustment so that it lined up properly. I drove it for a good few miles on the motorway, etc with the top down and the light never came on :) Maybe they just disconnected the red light :D

I've also got my bluetooth passkey finally and, after a few tries, got it to pair with my iPhone. It appears to work quite well!

I appreciate everyone's advice on this.... In the end the dealer offered to have his mechanic fix it so I never had to ask for or demand anything, which was a huge relief!

Thanks, and no problem there! :) :) :)

Well damn, it appears I spoke too soon :( I took it for a short drive today and the good old' flashing light is back. When I opened the top it got stuck on the windscreen locks so I had to give it a little shove to help it. I opened and closed it a few times but the red light persisted. That said, I just gave the hood a good clean and put some conditioner on it, lowered the hood with no probs and went for another drive with no red light!

I'm confused.

I think I'd like an actual BMW service centre to look at it next, so that's my plan.

Sounds like they adjusted the entire hood so it locks down properly. The result is it is no longer aligned properly at the windscreen. A little fine tuning is needed to make it happy at both ends.

You might consider giving the blokes who did the initial work a chance to make it right, with no further cost to you. If their 'fix' causes a related problem, they owe it to you to make it right.

Thanks, I took your advice and contacted the dealer again. They're now going to keep the car for a couple days and give me a loan car while they fix it :) Their mechanic told me he planned to take the hood off in order to get it lined up properly - sounds a bit scary to me! :?

Sorry to high jack here a little. (glad you got the issue sorted in the end though).

I have noticed with my new z that the red light flashes, it did it once putting the roof down, then windows didn't work for a while, but then sorted themelves out. Them today putting the roof up just as it knocked down on top of the windscreen the light flashed 1-2 times. I kept my finger held, but the windows didn't go back up like they normally do.

When I got home gave it a few cycles, windows and roof work fine as they should, how very odd.

Hi Rich,

Hopefully someone on here can give you some indication of what it could be. It doesn't sound like my problem though - my flashing red light is due to the hood not locking down properly after it's openned. Unfortunately I'm STILL waiting on the dealer to fix it - I'm waiting for their loan car to become available :(

Right..i have had this problem and the dealers told me it was possible my frame was twisted, and would cost upwards of 3k to rectify. I knew this to be untrue and desided to have a look for myself. All it was...was the small catch (its like a yale lock) that engages in the catch when the roof has completely finishes lowering was about 2mm out of alighnment. (this happens electronically) A quick tinker with the alighnment adjustments fixed it just fine.
Now the bad thing is that i only started having this trouble..AFTER the stealers had fitted a new roof motor...yet they refused to acknowledge this.

Cassie-uk,i had this issue too recently,on a forum-run as well, and took it to my dealers....as said above, its just the catchj that needs adjusted,so it engages properly, and is a quick/easy fix for your dealer
