2005 3.0 Coolant Leak

Hi guys, just got the zed out of hibernation (I know, but don't ask!) and took it for a quick spin.

Already replaced the bonnet release cable (front section) and cleaned up the mechanism due to a non opening bonnet.

Only a short drive to get everything up to temp and no high revs. About 2 miles in the coolant light comes on!

Turn round and straight back home.

Looks like the leak is coming from the right hand side of the thermostat housing where it joins the pipe. With the engine hot but off I was getting a drip from the bottom of the hose about every second.

I can see a small amount of liquid on the joint between the housing and the pipe and the belts and starter are covered in liquid, along with the underside of the bonnet.

Using he search button I have seen this might just be an o ring issue and if so can anyone give an approximate cost for an Indy to this?

Hi side exit, if the expansion bottle has split, you would see thus by only losing water when the engine us hot and coolant is under pressure then a new bottle ( genuine BMW) is an expensive part relatively, about 75 plus. However patent part is about 35 my Indy told me after he had fitted a genuine one. Labour is less than 45 mins.

Thanks csm but not the expansion tank. It's where the pipe from the the expansion tank (I think) goes into the thermostat.

My expansion tank leaked, I took it out and the tank was fine no problems, i suspected the O-rings but couldn't get them quickly so i ended up getting a new tank, I've tested the old one and it looks perfect so i think it was the O-rings. I have a spare pair from the bottom end of expansion tank.

I had the same problem, bought a new o-ring from BMW, which was around £3, and then re-fitted the temp sensor - Job done and leak fixed.

Andrew.

Thanks for the replies.

Been a bit busy. BMW only wanted to sell me a complete hose, lol.

Will get the o ring ordered this week and see how it goes.

Hi guys I have this problem to can you take the thermostat out from under neath the car by removing plastic floor pan or do i hand to take the expansion tank out to fit new o-rings,regards rich.
