2004 Z4 3.0 in risk of fire?

IMG_0353.jpgI was not overly concerned when I saw the news reports of BMW fires last year. Then BMW recalls a million cars, so I guess it is real. They recalled some Z4's but starting in 2007. The news article showed a picture of a '04 Z4 burning. What is the overall opinion on if the older Z4's have the same issue as the '07 and newer Z4's that were a part of the recall? I want to park my 2004 Z4 3.0 in the garage but not at the risk of a house fire.

If the earlier cars carried the same risk I think bmw would have recalled them as well, why wouldn’t they have?

I am cynical I guess.... I would think they would recall as few models as possible to save cost. Maybe they are not forced to recall older cars?

Which fire risk recall are you referring to? The latest UK recalls on BMW's UK site are for the B+ battery connector on some models including e89 Z4's Produced from 02/12/2008 to 30/11/2009 and the blower controller on various models but not on any Z4's.

Since some 3 series built at the same time as the e85 are affected by the battery connector recall, I can only assume that it only affects German built cars (the e85 was built in Spartanburg USA, the e89 production moved back the German Regensburg plant)?

It might be worth checking out the DVSA UK recall list, http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/searches/search.asp?cboStartMonth=1&cboStartYear=1992&cboEndMonth=1&cboEndYear=2020&cboMake=BMW&cboModel=Z4&cboSortOrder=rec_launch_date&cboAscDesc=ASC&PageSize=10&tx=0.9888662&newsearch=newsearch

and by the way..... Hi and Welcome. Almost missed you with a direct starting question but you got us a pic of your Zed :D you would not believe how many nags it takes to get some newbies to post a pic!

3.0 Roadster great choice

Just realised it looks like you might not be UK based? other recalls have been published for the e85 in the US (presumably litigation gets better results there :) )

Welcome to the forum (hope you stay around) and 2nd what Harry says
Very nice example you have there...Toledo blue ???

Thanks for the feedback. I did just jump right in with a question as soon as I joined. I had reviewed the forum first though to see what I could learn before asking my question. I did not find information on the fires, but I did learn that newbies should add a picture of their ride 8) .

I live a 3 hour drive from the Spartanburg plant here in the US. There was a news article in May 2017 about BMW fires. Later in the year, the recalls started. An E85 was an example of one of the burned up cars, but it was not included in the recall. I am not sure if the 2004 uses the same part (PCV valve heater) that is driving the other cars to be recalled or not and was hoping that somebody in this forum might know the answer. Having my Zed burn would be bad enough, but burning down the house with it would really make for a bad day.

I called the BMW recall support line to discuss. I was told that if the same PCV Valve was used in my 2004 as was used in the 2007-2011 Z4's, then it would have been recalled. Actually speaking to them made me feel less cynical.... at least for a little while.

To be fair BMW don't seem to have an age cut-off for recalls.

My 2002 E46 had a recall in June 2015 for a passenger airbag issue, then another in October 2017 for the driver's airbag - by which time it was 15 years old!

My Z4 was built in August 2006 and isn't subject to the recall, but my E91 3 Series built in August 2005 did need recall work last year for the heater/A/C blower motor.

Hopefully you will be OK.

Glad I read tongue end of the thread. I was thinking I had missed a recall for a moment there. Were the ///Ms built-in the USA?

Any ways, welcome to the board OP. :)

Don't know how I missed that - the tan roof and round reflectors on the rear quaters should have been a give away.

I also, just to keep up the theme, have a mini built in the Netherlands
