2004/5 Identification

Hi there everyone.

This is my first post, so please forgive me if I've missed this in an FAQ somewhere.

Anyway, I currently drive a 73 240z and the time has come to upgrade to another 6 cyl, RWD 2 seater. Bring on the a/c!

At the moment I'm looking at a manual, MY05 3.0L. How do I tell the difference between a 2004 and a 2005? Here in Australia the model year runs from 1 Jan - 31 Dec, however I'm aware that model years in the US run to different times. Are there any clear differences between the 04 & 05 models?

Thanks in anticipation of your response.

Welcome to the forum :D

didnt some my05 have clear headlights - ie no orange?

not a definate tell cos you can upgrade later... anybody else?

Easiest way is to look at build date on the panel on the door frame. Also VIN number.

Were there any fundamental differences? I note the problems the 04's seem to have with steering racks...

Not sure. They seemed to have sorted everything out by the time they built my coupe-it's been danged hot the last two summers and no stickies.

Most of the guys on here are UK and US so it's really dificult to comment on any Australian specific year to year changes.
Frnakly I don't theink there were any aside perhaps as mentioned the clear amber turn lights inside the headlights that were fitted in 2005 just before the facelift of 2006.

From launch to 2006 there were actually few changes, then a fair few when they changed the front and rer bumpers, lights front and rear and the engines.

I'd take the VIN number to a local dealers for accurate identification and they'll also be able to give you a build sheet

In the states, the 04 had no reflectors on the front bumper the 05's did. I don't know about outside the states if they had the reflectors or not. 05's had the clear third brake light as well.

I'm sure the 04 had the amber rear lights and the 05 had the clear. 05 was the only year this was the light style. At least this is true for US spec cars.
