Hi All... First post so here goes!

I got myself the Z4 a couple of weeks ago, its done 48k miles and is in mint condition, MOT no advisories etc

Am really really loving the car (much prefer it to my old 3.2 TT) but when up at 5,000 revs or so in any gear it starts to whine slightly, sounds almost like a supercharger!! Just asking if this is normal and if not, what it might be??

Any help really appreciated!!

Cheers,
Dunc.

No mine same age and milage does not do it, just floor it up to red cant hear any noise only exhust when it pops on over run. :D

Sorry how rude of me welcome aboard.
They do have a mind of there own at times mostley ele.
Plenty of help here on the forum someone might respond soon.

Alternators can sound like a Stuka if a bearing is on it's way or are overcharging, quite easy one to eliminate, or an overtightened belt maybe? Can you hear it where it's coming from by revving with the bonnet up?

Anyway welcome to the Forum, It's probably just a case of new Z4 owner neurosis which most of us went through, listening to every noise with dread

Oh and did anybody mention :worthless:

Welcome Dunc - let's see some pictures.

As Ewazix mentions I'd be looking at the ancills under the bonnet given it's pure engine and not other part of the driveline.

Belt is self tensioning so not that, but there are a couple of idler pulleys on it that can whine too. Also leaks in the intake pipes can make strange whines and whines. Mine sounded like a jet at 3,000 rpm until fixed.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes and ideas!

Havent checked whether it could be drive-train yet...

Will have a closer listen at the weekend and check out the ancill's etc
Hopefully will be the "new Z4 owner neurosis" Ewazix mentioned :)

Will put some images up shortly!!

Thanks again.

Here's a couple of rough pics that I took the day I got it, need to take some with the hood down when we get a nice day!!

You can't see inside on these pics but its got red seats too :)

Welcome to a fellow 2.2 owner. As cj says it is likely to be the air intake split- follow the pipe from the air box to the engine - the secondary pipe coming off it will be split. Mine is and am going to replace it when I get a spare 5 mins- its about 40-50 quid for the part

Paddy, thanks very much - will have a look at let you know

Cheers rhys.

Seems to be a cracking forum having had a good look around 8)

right... much later than planned have had good old listen under the bonnet.

Once the engine was warm revv'd it up and it is quite difficult to pin-point the whine but it sounds like its coming from either the alternator or perhaps a bit further back (belt maybe?!?). Can't be 100% sure.

Looked all along the intake tube/hose and cant find any gaps at all.

Do you guys think it could be anything serious??
