2003 Z4 e85 2.2 alternator the same as 2005 2.0?

Did you get a genuine bosch regulator?

When I had this problem my car had a no make regulator on it that would only put out 12 volts which is not enough, voltage needs to be over 13.5 running.

I replaced my regulator which fixed the issue for abit but then started to have problems again so I bought a reconditioned alternator which had a genuine regulator on it but would only put out 12 volts so I had to swap it for my replacement regulator and I've been OK since,

My experience these cars are fussy about the regulator, you can test resistance on your regulator with a multimetre which will confirm that it's broken,
Plenty of videos on YouTube explaining how to do this.

Also use electrical contact cleaner on the connector to the regulator to make sure your getting a good connection, I kept getting a bsd fault till i did this.

One last thing I replaced my alternator because the slip rings were heavily worn if yours look like this then I recommend a new alternator or getting yours rebuilt as suggested by colb.

One last thing If your

My man dismantles the innards, checks bearings and commutator, fits an oem regulator pack, he won't use pattern parts on BMW alternators. Test runs when he rebuilds them. He used to clean and refurb the outer but cut back on doing that to keep costs down.
Works in his workshop at the back of his house in Tredegar, South Wales.

Guys like him are now few and far between consider myself lucky to have him close and he is very reasonable on price.

Hello everyone!

Just a few things I learned from this process in case someone needs to use it in future.
1. As mentioned by Joez4 - It needs to be an original Bosch replacement. They are about £60 online. This type of Z4 the Regulator actually speaks to the ECU so if it isn't the original Bosch one, it will not work!
2. It's less intimidating to remove the alternator once you've done it 4 times haha on the plus side i've become an expert at it!
3. I've fixed the problem by replacing the alternator with a good second hand one for £70. I figured if a voltage regulator is £60 I might as well spend an extra £10 just in case.

Thank you to everyone who helped me. She's running beautifully now!
