2003 z4 convertible top release

My convertible top only opens 1/4 of the way I tried to release the pressure of the pumps with the red release cable in trunk (picture below) so I can open it manually but it does nothing like the cable seems stretched or something. How do I fix it?
The guy at the garage thinks the top is out of alignment I think the hydraulic motor is shot? Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to fix the pumps and how to put the to in alignment?

Thanks for ur help! :)

I pulled on it and it don't move at all. Do you all think the motor is shot? The one garage thinks it's outta alignment. I think it's the hydraulic motor. I'm taking it to get diagnosed it only cost 35$. I would be happy to do it manually but that red cable won't release the pressure the off the hydraulic motor. Does anyone know how I can do it manually? (Does anyone know how I can release the pressure off the hydraulic motor?)

When I re-built my roof motor, one of the things that was wrong was that the button that the lever that that red handle moves pushes on was seized (its a mechanically very simple assembly that just releases pressure in the hydraulics). It only has a couple of mm play and if you pull hard on teh red handle the cable will stretch further than the button actuates, so its difficult to tell if anything has happened. The only way to deal with it was with the motor out. The good news is, whatever the garage tells you, these motors and pumps are very rarely actually dead, they just need some TLC (and WD 40). The bad news is, the big job is getting the motor and pump out in the first place.

With a bit of brute force you should be able to close the roof even without pulling the red lever. I managed it on my car a couple of times before getting at the pump (but the difference when the red lever is working is night and day)

I read that to take the top off shipkiller said that the top should be put down in order to take the top off and with the red handle not releasing any pressure I can only open my roof a 1/4 of the way. How am I gonna be able to take the top off to access the motor if I can't put the top down?

I had the same problem with mine, accessed the hydro/motor assy by removing the plastic cover, then I removed the release mechanism from the motor and pressed the button with a large screwdriver..not saying it was easy, It was a pita , took several hours , good luck !
