2003 Z4 2.5i Roof Motor

Hi all,

Recently purchased a 2003 Z4 2.5i (55k miles) and requiring advice on motor spares:

Problem Overview:

1) Pressing the convertible button inside the cabin and the whole system is temperamental - sometimes it engages the top roof motor mechanism and sometimes it doesn't. I checked the fuses for good connection and all seem in order. The roof only disengages from the windscreen frame about 2-3inches then everything stops. The 'roof down' button then begins to flash. No activity happens in the rear electric-hydraulic roof compartment.

2) I am aware of the emergency hydraulic release chord in the boot however cannot keep using this for the obvious reasons of wanting the whole system to work correctly.

3) I am also aware of the boot switch on the bulkhead between the boot and cabin where the manually adjustable boot rack lowers and engages a small switch to inform the system roof can now be lowered in to the rear roof compartment. This seems to be in working order.

4) Once lowered the roof manually using the hydraulic release chord, I press the flashing 'roof-open' button to engage the locking mechanism to hold down the roof. Roof-open button now stops flashing.

5) Once again when I want to close the roof I press the 'roof-close', pull the release chord, manually lift the roof to the windscreen frame, then press the flashing roof-close button to lock the roof to the windscreen frame.

Enquiry:

(i) Does anyone know where I can get affordable spares for the motor?

(ii) Would it be of any value to try and test the motor using a car battery or (from your wealth of experience) is there any point in doing that and worth simply purchasing a new motor and therefore referring back to (i)?

(iii) Has anyone attempted and successfully restored the rear electric-hydraulic motor unit? From my understanding drain hole blocks up and water floods the motor unit?

Can anyone offer me any sound advice and give recommendations?

Best regards,

David.

Looks like you've covered all the obvious problems, not sure where you are based but there's a guy in Durham (Dave) who relocates motors into the boot and clears out water logged drain holes. He has resurrected many faulty motors too. see this thread:

If the windows are dropping, the hood is disengaging from the windscreen and then it all stops, it is usually the motor. If you can get to the motor you can apply the terminals straight on to a 12v battery and see if it spins.

New Motors are available on ebay around £180, but if they've only recently packed in, its usually revivable. The usual thing is to relocate the motor to the boot if replacing it. All of the hoses are long enough to just swing it in there.

There's plenty of posts on here about it, just use the search facility

If you need help, there's a few members offering a service to extract and relocate.

Classic drowned motor symdrome. If you're fairly useful round cars it's not that bad a job to get the roof off and refurbish the motor, there's a few guides around the best being from Shipkiller, just google it.
Did mine 18 months ago and it's been perfect, only took me a couple of hours and the only cost was the silicone sealant to properly seal the motor housing to (hopefully) stop it happening again.

Just for info ....I'm on the Herts/Beds boarder near J10 on the A1M at present ( I'm moving very soon hopefully ! To Weston Turville In Bucks )

Why not add your location to your profile, so it appears on all your posts ?

Cheers guys.

Would anyone know someone and somewhere selling a cheap second motor? Trying to avoid spending too much cash as I'm carrying brake discs and pads upgrade and not forgetting a whole new set of tyres!

I have recently cleaned a spair one up and sent it to someone. On the condition they would send there old dead one back. So I could have a go at reviving another one? I will chase the guy up see if he has done it yet. Once I get it back and if I can get it running its yours for the price of postage.
