2003 X5?

Hubby is interested in a 2003 X5 sitting on the dealer's lot. $19,950, 63000 miles. Are there any known problems? It has the 3.0l and steptronic. Looks nice. We're going to drive it this afternoon and probably make an offer if I can't dig up any reason not to.

CJ has one of those. I have the 3.0 diesel, no issues with mine (late 2005).

Thanks! He *was* looking at Jeep Wranglers, but the prices on them are higher than the X5. We drove a 4.8l X5 at Homecoming and it was a blast. I know the 3.0 doesn't have as much power, but it will do nicely as a daily driver for him.

Thanks for the link. He doesn't like the body style on the X3, though. I tried to get him to look at it--same size engine, smaller, lighter truck.....what the heck. it's gonna be his.

Hi Smokin,

I drive a 2001 X3 3.0i sport and have had it since new so you are looking a the same model really. Historically I've been a new car every 3 years person, but this has been such an amazing vehicle that I refuse to trade it. OK it cost £45,000 sterling in 2001 and it's worth - well probably a weekend break...lol so trading is expensive.

There are no real issues with them and they seem bullet proof. I just had the rear bushes changed but at 85000 miles and considering I tow Jeeps with it, it's acceptable.

Look for a well loaded example. It must have leather, steptronic and sat Nav. Seat heaters are neat.
Again as always a good service history is comforting, but hell for £10k you get a lot of car.
Some prefer diesel due to it's economy but petrol (gas) makes it a quick car without the excesses of the 4.4i V8

In the US X5world.com is IMHO the definitive authority on them.

PM or post any specific questions

Thanks! Unfortunately, the diesel isn't available in the US (even though they build the darn things in SC!). This one has steptronic and leather. Does NOT have sat nav (but Garmin is relatively cheap now-a-days). This is a one owner and serviced at the dealer where we're going to buy.

I'll try the X5world website. Thanks again!!!!!

Sounds like you found one you like

Very good value as well considering that just like CJ, I paid 90k USD for mine 3 years ago ...

I had a 2006 X5 4.4i and now have a 2007 X5 4.8i and they're a blast. It drinks gasoline like there is no tomorrow but other than that it's an incredible vehicle.

But at least gasoline is less then half the price of what it is over here ...

I drove it yesterday-I drive a manual tranny so I can feel that ever-so-small hesitation that all automatics have, but that 3 liter is pretty danged peppy even in an X 5. Everything inside looks nice. Hubby will go drive it today (without me so he can make up his own mind).

Thanks, fellas!

For the type of car, it is class leading without a doubt. I drove all sorts before getting the X5 and the X5 is the only real driving car, the rest just wallows all over the road.

As CJ mentioned - solid cars

Well, hubby drove it today (I didn't go with him so he could make up his own mind). We pick it up on Monday :D

I told him I should have warned him that BMWs are addictive!

Yeah, he's gonna side up there. I'm also trying to get him to sign up here since he made Homecoming and had a blast!
