2003 remote locking issue

Hello all from a currently stormy and wet Norfolk, UK.

I have purchased a low mileage 2.5 auto that I am slowly sorting the issues on. I have sorted the roof issue, and moved the motor/pump inside the boot as well as the occupant seat sensor on passenger seat (no more airbag light!) only thing I can't work out is the remote locking.

I have read through the forums about either the fzv antenna in the mirror or the GM5 module at fault.

The car locks and unlocks with no issues through the key in the door and all the buttons inside work correctly - oddly the passenger electric mirror isn't working either.

the original mirror auto dim function wasn't working, however I have replace with another and is now working correctly. I had hoped this would sort the remote locking, but I am still unable to get it work. I have tried the "re-pairing" with the key and replaced the battery. I'm happy the key is working as there is a voltage drop on the battery when pressing the buttons.

is there a way to test if its the gm5 or fzv?

I have inpa and a scan shows no errors?

Hello. I'm in Attleborough. May be able to help.
My first thought was battery, but you've swapped that.
Did pairing it work? As in, did the locks go down then up when you completed it?
I have a few GM5s, of both types, which we could slave in.

The electric mirror sounds like it's most likely to be the motor inside the assembly. If it was the switch then neither side would adjust.
I have a spare switch to try, and also mirrors with motors we can rob.

the pairing didn't work, I tried all 3 methods listed and the locks didn't react.
can the GM5 module just be swapped and keys paired?
im only 20 mins down the road from you so would be handy if you have parts to try

Yup, there are two types of GM5, 5RD and Star 12 Low. I have each type. They are not interchangeable.
Don't suppose you have any history on the car, as I had one before where the GM5 had been replaced by the wrong type. Was pure guessing that found that out!
If the pairing didn't work before and after the new battery then GM5 does sound favourite.
I can try an old key and see if that pairs, just to rule out your key being the problem.

in 2025 there is an invoice from bmw for roof not working (which was the motor sat in water) and a failed b pillar module and replacement airbag trigger module (2025). the glove box was removed when I got the car, I suspect to access the fuses for the roof.

I was unaware of the east anglia Z4 group, I will look it up

I'm impressed if BMW managed to replace a B-Pillar module in 2025! There've been no new ones available for quite a while now and I have even been to garages to code secondhand ones in as their software won't do it.
Given that the fuses are accessible through the back of the glovebox, it sounds slightly suspect that it was removed? Possibly someone else thinking it was the GM5?
What year is the car? They seem to be mostly Star 12 Low in the later ones.

can you see which version is fitted without removing the module or is it fitted with the connectors facing down?

CR, yes that would be me
The label is on the top.
Easiest way is to undo the two nuts holding the bracket to the bulkhead, then lower the whole thing down.

I will try have a look later and take some photo's, like you say someone could have tried to replace but with the wrong one. I assume there is no way to tell which one it should have other than to try them in the car?

I just checked my wife's car which I know has a Star 12 Low, and another one I have here which I know has a 5RD.
On Realoem, they both come up as the same thing.

Takes ten minutes to swap them over and check if the key will pair to them.
Another five minutes to swap the drivers door switch to diagnose the mirror issue.
