2003 Door doesn't open from outside (passenger side)

It's either a broken cable or a broken clip on the locking mechanism inside the door, the thing is, it's bloody impossible to reach it yourself without removing an awful lot or losing an arm. I actually have a spare cable, but I think you need a specialist tool to get to get the unit out.
If you could remove the unit, it'd be the easiest thing in the world the repair the clip, fitting a cable can be done with the mech in situ but you really do cut your arm up.
My local specialist wanted about £180 to fix the issue.

How much needs to be removed to diagnose it properly? When you say specialist tool, is it one most mechanics would have?
Thanks for the reply! My friend is a mechanic and he wanted me to ask on here first. If it's a big job just to diagnose it and the clip + cable are cheap I'll order both of them.

No its a BMW tool. The TIS system used to be online, so there was a full guide to replacing this, but BMW have had it taken down recently so I can't link you too it.
To diagnose it properly, you need to remove the doorcard (easy) and then unfortunately remove the whole membrane under there (if you can do this carefully you can re-use) then you can see what's disconnect by sticking a torch in the bottom hole of the door and sticking your head in there too.

I'm pretty competent and I'm not sure I could have done it, I was too scared to try and remove the outer door handle (specialist tool for that) and in the end someone managed to hit that door and I had the whole door replaced on them. :x
If I removed the handle, I probably could have done it.
With the handle removed you should be able to either glue it in place if the connector is broken or clip it back in/replace the cable.
