2003 3.0 Roadster with 4K miles £12k

Nothing to do with me, but this could be interesting to follow.

So someone's bought a £32k roadster, put it away as an investment rather than drive it and now its up for £12k.
Not a shrewd investment, but they may well have enjoyed looking at it for 17 years.

And they plate is also up for sale at £10k

When i read the thread title i thought thats a massive typo.

But no, someone really does think there is a 2003 3.0i car worth £12,000

It’s not even a decent spec. No MFSW, sports seats or heated seats unfortunately.

I can understand someone mothballing a car for historic/investment purposes but consider the storage costs over the last 17 years to when the average is about £100pcm and it’s been a financial disaster for somebody.

You’ve got to choose the right car and model in the range for it to work but in this case It’s £32k down to c£5k being realistic. However had they spent £5k on a Mk 1 Ford Escort seventeen years ago it would have been the other way round.

Yeah what would have been an excellent investment would have been not buying a car in the first place!

But yeah surely to buy a car as an investment you a) buy a cheap car, and hope it goes up, and b ) dont buy a very common bmw z4

I have seen this many times before you find a BMW Mercedes etc with minuscule mileage but the spec is rubbish!

Can anyone think of anything Car wise from 2000 (ish) that is worth more now than it’s Original list price.... even ignoring inflation?

I’m sure there must be a few exotics, but the last McLaren F1 was circa 1998 I think?

This is just hilariously ridiculous

Hmmm...good question. Got me thinking. For clarity lets keep it to the first decade of the millennium, 2000 - 2010.

Ford racing puma maybe? Can’t quite recall how much they were new but if this one is £15k with 75,000 miles on it they must be well north of £20k with sub 40k miles.... https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1200928

Good shout, I’m reading that new price was between £22k & £23k... only 1000 made

Someone's bought it, forum member?

Or is it that the auction has ended with no bids....
It would take some degree of lunacy to have purchased this, surely...

You're right wyldie but after what I've seen going on in the world over the last few months there is no shortage of lunatics so I'm not ruling anything out. Cracking zed you've got there mate, Is it Melbourne red?

So what would you say it would be worth? Or more so, what would you pay? Assuming it's virtually box fresh I'm in the minority clearly thinking it's not bad value!

That’s a very good point. Lockdown has made people do some very strange things. Perhaps someone took a shining to this...

Thanks for the comment on the Z4. It’s San Francisco red. Changes from deep red to sometimes having an orange hew to it.

Could've sold it for a lot more I reckon. With that mileage the car is unique. There are people out there with silly money who would jump at the chance to buy an example like this

But I’m not sure it’s special enough. It’s a 17 year old car with low miles. Doesn’t have many options or anything particularly special about it. It might spark a premium over cars of the same age but for that money, I’d be looking at an M roadster...

£12 grand would buy you pretty much a new everything, including a replacement low mileage engine.

I think id rather a car where every part is brand new than one where everything is the 17 year old original part.

Imagine how awful the original tyres would be, despite still having 7mm of tread!
