2003 2.5 - Want a better sound

I'm looking for some advice on the best way to enhance the sound of my z4. It's a 2003 2.5 se and while the engine sounds great, I'm interested in making it sound louder and ideally throatier (if that makes sense). I tend to feel the sound is a little understated instead of showing off the sound of the engine. I'm not interested in spending thousands and think that maybe a sports back-box might be the best option. Has anybody got any ideas or info on mods they've done? Info on costs involved would also be appreciated.
 
Yep, retrofitting the sound generator isn't that hard to do. Had it done on a friends 2.5i and it sounded great.
 
Thanks for the replies. The back-box delete seems the easiest/cheapest option and will give me the extra noise I was after. Something else to add to the ever increasing list.
