Just a quick post on living with my 35iS for a couple of months, after coming from a TVR Tuscan S the first thing I noticed was the build quality, everything fitted well and simply worked without fuss...the second thing I noticed was how it was much much slower than the TVR...this really bothered me for a while, the most noticeable thing was how slow the Z seemed to react to inputs from the accelerator, everything in the TVR was instantaneous and happened in a blur with a symphony of noise and an assault on your senses. But gradually I have learned the difference between a naturally aspirated car and a forced induction car and I now like the efficient way in which the 35 progresses without fuss and always remains stable without causing alarm...its actually quicker than I at first thought and more fun than it should be in Sport plus mode. Ironically I use it in comfort mode 99% of the time with the occasional blast in + mode, I do long journeys of 500+ miles on a regular basis and my daily commute is 45 miles one way and the Z is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever used. The DAB keeps signal in areas where I used to lose it, the seats are superb, the heater is great and cruise control and bluetooth are invaluable...but what was BMW thinking when they put cup holders in the armrest? The Ergonomic team must of had a holiday that day. Ive also gone from a car that was achieving 16mpg to a car that is giving me 30mpg on the same run. Road noise is a bit intrusive on some roads but im still on run flats, so I hope this improves when its time to change rubber.
In short, the Z for me has been a bit of a slow burner..but now, I like it, I like it a lot and will be keeping this one until something really really special comes along.

Glad the car is growing on you. I guess most cars are going to feel different to TVR . They are so visceral and raw that nothing in a standard production could possibly match it.

Having had several Z4 in various guises, I have t say my favourite is the 35iS. Has as much grunt as I want without being in danger of ditching it on a daily basis. Decent economy too.

What's not to like? ;-)

Interesting write up. I came from a five pot turbo engine, in my old fiat coupe to the na S54 in my MR. I used to regularly drive with the local TVR's back then. They used to take several car lengths out of me, if I was in the wrong gear, when the guy in front hoofed it  If I was leading though I could make them work to keep, just that initial lag had to be worked around. :driving:

Look across the whole 2 seater marketplace , i can't think of any other car that comes close to a 89 twin turbo if you compare they have a hardtop yet convertible , year /miles / spec / performance / maintenance costs / ownership overheads / reliability & german build quality ?
To my mind they have no rivals in their sector
