2 litre to 3 litre - need some input. . .

I bought my 3.0 pre-facelift about 3.5 years ago now on an 03 plate, to be absolutely honest it wasn't just the engine that swayed me from the smaller engined variants - at the time I was specifically after a pre-facelift and in terms of equipment the 3.0 cars on offer tended to have a fair amount more kit than the 2.5, 2.2 or the 4-pot 2.0 variants (well, these came in from 2005 on I think). Don't get me wrong, the engine is lovely and played a big part in my choice, but it wasn't the only factor in deciding to go for what was (for the 2003 model year) a Z4 with the top engine.

I used mine as a daily driver until I changed jobs and now commute by train to an office in Central London, so it's now my weekend car. As a daily driver a later model 2.0 would have made sense from an economy perspective, but I bought an early 3.0 with my eyes wide open.

Just make sure you're changing because the performance difference is 'enough' to make it worthwhile to you. There's a lot to be said for keeping a car you know (for all it's good and bad points that you now know and appreciate/accept) than getting into another car and finding it disappoints (unknown history, faults that become apparent later).

As for the 'fun' element of driving a less powerful car - I am certain that on a twisty road the 1.6 Focus I owned way back would leave the Z4 trailing if I were magically able to drive both at the same time - I knew that car and drove it 'quickly' a lot of the time, having so much fun in the process. The Z4 3.0 is fun and fast, however if I tried to drive it like I drove that Focus I would probably hurt/kill myself, I will openly admit just don't have the talent. It's the one big reason I've not upgraded to a Z4M, beautiful though they are, I would be terrified to exploit what it is capable of without some decent training. You might find that the smaller engine in that same chassis means you will still have just as much fun, maybe even more - than moving to the 3.0 (unless you're in a straight-line drag race).

. . .but the 2.0 litre still remains high in my estimations wherever I end up

I take it reading between the lines  that you give it an 'Italian Tune Up' from time to time so I take it you don't experience the dreaded 'emissions light' problem that you may have seen Andy post about?

Italian tune up - not certain what that mean but have an idea(?) - the Zed does get used to it's potential on our runs and it seems to thrive on it. I'm sure the engine is under-stressed at 150bhp and it remains smooth throughout the rev range. As I've said - it's never misses a beat and just keeps coming back for more - I think it's one of those engine that is better used this way. We shall see - been wonderful these last two years and I remain impressed by it.

Another great posting thanks Dev.

Still really appreciating your responses all - many thanks.

Anyone have thoughts on the 08 plate 3.0si at just under 11K? Been offered 5.5K for mine trade in - BMW at Warrington?

:driving:

IT's THE SOUND OF THE STRAIGHT SIX THAT YOU WILL REALLY FALL IN LOVE WITH... and lots of effortless torque

There are some great sounding six cylinder engines out there but for me the 3.0 Si is not one of them.
If you want a really nice sound, listen to an Alpina - I had lots of people commenting on it at the Kent/Sussex meet

+1  :driving:

Paul you know that your 3.0si itch needs scratching :poke:

You won't be disappointed as you already know my thoughts on the subject. If you were closer you could have had a drive in mine, not that you really need convincing do you?

You can probably add some valuable insight to this thread Fran, seeing as you made the jump from a 2L to something with a bit more grunt :)

'Swiftly' What do you think about the Warrington 3.0si price? See above.

Paul

Love Stratus Grey and the piano black trim

Its probably about £500 to much in my opinion, no doubt you would try and negotiate this down if everything checks out with it service wise etc. £10500 with AUC and full years Road Tax included is fine :)

I got 12 month Road Tax included as part of the deal without asking when I bought my zed, however not sure if this is the norm with all dealers though, but worth pushing for.

Great Swiftly,

That's where I was hoping to end up. . .not too strong a price then? It's more than I wanted to pay to make the change but prepared to go higher for the right car from a BMW franchise. . .

Been in contact with them and will contact them tomorrow - if I can get to that price point I'll go down Saturday morning to test drive.

Not particularly in a rush but like you, the colour trim and equipment are to our liking - park assist would be useful too.

Thanks for responding - appreciated.

Paul

If you decide you want it, don't be too enthusiastic with them after the test drive, let then talk you round and bargain hard - it's coming up to the end of the month, quarter and year so they'll be trying to meet sales targets and you'll be talking about buying a roadster at the time of year when it's hardest to sell them.

If necessary let it go down to the wire because you don't have to complete before the 31st

NB Feel free to ignore all of that 'cos free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it

When I went to buy mine its worth checking the front fog lights out for any misting or internal reflector corrosion, I got the dealer to replace them as part of the condition of the sale as they were wet through on the inside. Also check the service book as I had to point out that would soon be due a Service 2, so that was also done as part of the sale as well. I think the degree of flexibility as to what they will do is down to how much profit there is in the car, but it was worth my while being persistent as I really do like to strike a good deal :D

Hope all goes well for you, and as PerryGunn has said, don't be too enthusiastic and show your hand to early!

Good luck

I would look outside AUC with a 3.0, they're a reliable motor, so you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
There's a few knocking about on here's PH and Autotrader so you should be able to nail the spec you want too.

They've sent two video clips up - one thanking me for the enquiry and one of the Zed.

The car was shown pre-cleaning and detailing - which was a little disappointing - feel like I should take mine down filthy too. . .

No idea what tyres are on it - not shown under the bonnet - my seats are in better condition - first impressions, not blown away and have to imagine how it might be after a little tlc - still - nice to receive personal videos. Will have a long night. . .

Great advice folks thanks - will have to see if they will meet the price point before heading down and taking a closer look - overall I'm left a little lacking in enthusiasm. . .which is probably a good thing if I end up trading. Have to keep in mind how it could look. . .

We shall see. . .
