2.5Si Electrical Fault.

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum so firstly I'd like to say hello! I purchased a 2..6 - 2.5 Si on Friday and I'm already having an issue with the electrics.

The car has run fine over the weekend and has not had an issue. Today was the first day that I unlocked the roof using the fob and the problems began. As soon as I went over 5 miles on the drive to work I noticed the airbag warning light came on! I then continued to drive and noticed that NONE of my dashboard electrics were functioning (lights wouldn't switch on, indicators wouldn't flash from the inside but worked from the outside). The main electrical components (power steering, windows, radio, aircon ect) are all working fine.

The airbag fault light went off and all the electrics started working again. Then it was intermittently coming on and off and the symptoms above came back and then went away again when the light went off.

I took the car out on my lunch and drove it a good 10 miles and everything working fine. Went to park up and the light came back on again!!

I bought the car from a dealer and it came with a warranty that "covers all electrical including parts and labor "so naturally I gave them a call. I was disappointed to find in the small print that they do NOT cover airbags, airbag system, wiring or wiring looms, this begs the question, what electrics do they cover?!

Anyway, if anyone could help me before I go back to the dealer I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Sam

Don't think you will find they can get out of it that easy. You might need to get some advise but I believe they need to sort.

Also although you have having issues, put up an introduction post with some photos to keep the natives happy.

Take it straight back, the car they have just sold you is not fit for purpose ,on top of that it's unsafe to drive with the air bag light on as the it's now deactivated.
It's probably the battery u/s but let them sort it.If they won't sort it ,demand your money back.Take someone along as a witness .

Lowering you roof without the engine running probably took too much out of a failing battery, and the faults seem to appear with low voltage. Try putting the battery on charge and seed if the problems disappear. You won't get a battery on warranty but might get a good will gesture from the dealers and get them to foot the bill for a replacement battery. When I got mine the inlet hose was split at the "t", warranty wouldn't cover as it a a wearing part but the dealers covered the cost.

He has only bought the car last Friday ,don't mess about with it.If it needs a battery they should replace it as it was knackered when you bought the car.

battery on my old Z looked new but when I checked the date code on it, was the original one that came in the car

And I'll echo what the others have said warranty or no warranty if you buy from a dealer and any part of it is knackered then they have to sort it by law or take the car back and give you a full refund

Worth suggesting to them that a new battery might be a first port of call (at their cost) if you do want to keep it.

The Sale of Goods Act has been replaced by The Consumer Rights Act 2015. The essence is the same, the goods must be fit for purpose. Warranty or not, they have an obligation and you are empowered to choose the remedy.

What that guide doesn't show clearly is you can still have a repair or replacement within the initial 30 days and still reject if you're not happy with the repair as the period is paused.

I took it to the dealer after work and he advised me to come back today as nobody could look at it.

Hopefully today he will sort it out!

Car is all fixed!

Turns out that because I put my roof down with the engine off (on the key) it drained the battery below its charge state and was failing, the garage was really helpful to be fair and offered a refund if the problem couldn't be solved that day!!!

I am happy with my z4 now, just need that nice weather to come out again!!

Good news, so did the dealer replace the battery with a new one?
Rob

Nice to hear it worked out. I have the original battery in my '08 and am a bit nervous about it (must replace it soon...) but I keep it on a charger most days.
How about some pics of the new-to-you Z4? Don't see many 2.5Si's here
