2.5l into a 2.0i body! Help!!

Good afternoon all!

So to cut a very long story short... I have a 2.0i sdrive and my N20B20A engine died on me.... Thrust bearing failed... Crankshaft drilled a nice wee hole in my case as the engine went bang :!:

I've now managed to acquire a 2.3i (2.5l straight 6) and plan on putting the engine from that into my 2.0i shell...

Thoughts and advice welcome, I'm a total noob on this sort of thing but competent enough to follow instructions :D

Is it possible, what do I need to consider when making the transplant! If I go ahead with it I'll document fully my steps for future generations! Haha

Cheers!
David

I can only start to imagine the possible pain that you may endure...I hope I’m wrong but suspect this will not be a trivial exercise...look forward to the end of term report :!:

I hope you bought a lot more than just the engine to go with it.
I would imagine that the wiring harness and a lot of the electrics will need to be changed and you will need a new exhaust.

....and two extra spark plugs

Haha! I've bought the whole car! Probably should have been a bit clearer

A nice wee Valencia orange with a gloss black roof but no engine!
And another with a working engine but "slightly" bashed!

So why not just find another 2.0 engine and px and get shot of the 23i.
Or transfer body panels to the bashed 23i.
Transferring the electrics i would imagine would be a nightmare.

Option to swap the panels across might be the way! Although with the airbags going?.... Easy enough to swap them?

Got this car ridiculously cheap, hence the purchase!

Swapping the panels still leaves you with a white body when you open the doors, bonnet and boot though.

52000 miles!
Bit of a whine.... I assumed it was some electrical interference, sounded like it was coming from the radio, increased noise with RPM... But didn't sound bad, then bang. Was still driving, but sounded like a bag of bolts!
Total sh*te situation.... But hey ho, almost over it now! Lol

Well you've taken it remarkably well!

That's some project you're undertaking - good luck.

Damn, I will need to listen out for it. I have heard it is a fault with these engines.

Looks like you have everything you need to transplant the engine, drivetrain and whatever else is needed.

Nice project

That's one of the risks of car ownership. Any engine can s**t its pants at any time.

I know it's not much use now but the better option would be to find a matching engine. The 2.5l 6 is more of a sideways move than an upgrade and there is a lot of hassle involved in going from a turbo 4 to a NA 6. You've got a lot of components to swap and probably a fair amount of fabrication too.

Are engine weights different, need to change suspension?
What about rebuilding the damaged engine?
Find a new bottom end.
Probably little to no market for the 23i engine as it seems pretty bullet proof except for the one's water damaged.

Honestly this seems like a lot of pain for zero gain, its going to be far far easier to just repair or replace the damaged engine. With this transplant your into all sorts of additional changes to contend with such as the wiring loom etc. Surely there's some 2.0 lumps knocking around as that engine comes in all sorts of BMWs

That's going to be a lot of work.

Even if you swap everything from the white car into the orange one you're still going to find yourself in ECU coding hell resetting all the airbag modules etc.

Not a job I would take on (and I've done engine swaps on cars before).

sounds like a pain in the a**e to me and when its (if) finished would be difficult to insure and resale value after all the hard work would be minimal.
