Then guess what happened?... at the weekend the noise comes back again :x Oh well I'm obviously going to have to leave it with them overnight but unfortunately I don't have the luxury of a 2nd car and BMW have a several week wait for any courtesy cars... bit of a pain really.

:headbang:

mine was with the dealer for 8 weeks and they could not fault the car, i would insist on a replacement vehicle, they may get their asres in gear better

Hi guys

I've got my car booked in for them to look at this problem and after a 2 week wait they have a courtesy car available. I want to leave it with them overnight as the noise tends to occur in the mornings.

They want £15 for a days insurance but I'm planning to do what Taz x did i.e. leave the car with them until they're able to reproduce the problem (and fix it!). Do any of you know what the deal is with keeping a courtesy car and how much I'd be expected to pay?

Is it better to try and get my own insurance to cover the car?

This is the first time I've had one so no idea and don't want BMW to try and pull a fast one.

Regards

Pete.

Check with your own insurance. They usually cover it for free, just find out what car they have for you can get the cover note faxed to the dealers. That's what I do. Saves paying £15 a day.

Thanks for the responses.

I dropped the car off last night and asked to speak with one of the engineers. I explained the problem and the fact that it was intermittent as when I started the car for him it wasnt making the noise (as expected). I also mentioned the N52 / HVA service bulletin which he then found, printed off and attached it to the serivce notes...

Just had a call 10 minutes ago to say that they will be replacing the exhaust side lifters as per the service bulletin. Result!

I may need to keep the Mini Clubman D for a few days while they fix my car so will get my insurance to cover it as you lot have suggested.

Cheers,

Pete.

It's good they have agreed to to replace the exhaust side, only issue is the fix is hit and miss as it was the head that has been redesigned.

If this doesn't work you will need to be firm with them and get the head replaced. Lifter change is first fix now unfortunately.

Yeah I see this as the first step in getting the problem completely resolved. I'm still quite happy though as it was proving difficult to convince them that the problem even existed.

My plan now is to extend warranty and if the problem reappears after the hva fix then I'll be straight back in there asking for the head work to be done, step 2...

the advantage of this forum is you read the good and the bad

its an honest and open forum

you are at least aware of the issue, you may view a car that as been rectified

Fair point Taz plus I'm getting a 2 year AUC warranty so should be covered ?

if this forum was sponsered by BMW then this thread may well be deleted lol

A taz has said it may have been fixed. If the car has only ever been to one dealer it would be easy to check.

Went to view an 06 3.0 si today having read the post on the forum. After the test drive lifted the bonnet and could hear a slight ticking noise from the engine. Wasn't overly loud and couldn't really be heard with the bonnet down. Is this normal or does it sound like the dreaded starting to rear it's ugly head.

Asked the seller about any previous. He stated that he had bought it as approved used BMW and it had made the noise shortly after that, he had left it into them twice and they had rectified it.

the noise would be heard when cold, sounds like very loud tappets, you would hear it with the bonnet down and stood feet away

This was when at normal running temp immediately after the test drive. The car has 34k on it and has been serviced regularly, is there a slight tick from these engines in normal running. I can't remember looking for it before I came on here and read about the HVA problem.

There is a slight tick on these, but as Taz said you will know when the HVA's are the problem as it sounds like a tractor (See first post).
