2.5i, 2.5si & 3.0si Owners Beware (N52 Engine Only)

Good point Steve! The extended AUC warranty on a non-M is £41 per month the last time I looked, as long as you're under 60,000 miles. May be worth taking out if you're really worried, but there's no real reason to be.

Or record it with a video camera ...

thats what i did, BMW are still kicking and screaming saying they need to witness the fault themselves, over a week ago they said they would replace the HVA's, susrely it does not tak a week to replace them, i have lost faith with BMW

It does take quite a while to replace the HVAs, from memory. I can't quite remember how long, but I certainly didn't leave my car with them for a whole week. Perhaps that's just your dealer, rather than BMW themselves.

sorry, yes the dealer i have lost faith with, not BMW, they have now had the car 8 weeks now and to be fair they have said i could have had it back before, but i wanted it to stay there till it was sorted

I though the dealer might say that re the video.

The HVA's are way into the engine so I'm guessing it's quite an in depth job.

You can see the little buggers in the link below

if this does not cure it, then i don't fancy going back to them for them to change the cylindert head, but then would any other dealer be any better

would they all want to hear/reproduce the fault before attempting a fix?

I'm a little worried. My car (3.0Si 2007) is fine, but I only use it in the Summer so it has just under 10,000 miles. Has anyone raised the issue with BMW before the problem happens? Or di I just sit back and hope that it never happens.

not a chance, yours may never have the problem.

If after standing over winter your starts fine without ticking i would not worry

Thanks again, in particular IK and srhutch.

My car is due to be collected on Friday morning and returned in the afternoon once they've had a look at it (Haliwell Jones Warrington). I'm starting to think it may be a waste of time though because the problem hasn't happened once since the weekend... bloody typical!

I did take a video which recorded the noise but the quality isn't great and it would appear like Taz has already tried showing a video to BMW without success, I suspect it would be the same for me.

I would try and work out how to replicate it, if it starts doing it every time you leave the car for two days then you may have to leave with the dealer for this time so they can replicate. My old car always did longish journeys so always warmed up properly but I could go a few days in between which caused the problem to occur more often I believe.

Yeah I think I need to do this perhaps before I get BMW involved.

I am under 60k but didn't choose to extend when I bought the car, do you know if I still take take up their offer to extend the warranty even after 10 months or so of ownership?

Yep, you can take it up any time before your AUC warranty runs out, so wait until January before you take it out - you may not need it. From what I remember, it's £41pcm for your warranty for the top level cover with £0 excess.

Yep that's what I was paying without breakdown cover.

Quick update:

BMW picked up my car the week before last and they had it the whole day before returning it in the afternoon.

A guy rings me to say "we can't find any problems, oh by the way you have a nail in your near side rear we'll replace it for £297" :|

Then guess what happened?... at the weekend the noise comes back again :x Oh well I'm obviously going to have to leave it with them overnight but unfortunately I don't have the luxury of a 2nd car and BMW have a several week wait for any courtesy cars... bit of a pain really.

To add insult to injury the driver side cup holder has been broken for months and I asked them to look at it, response was "its not covered under warranty, its £75 for a replacement..."

:headbang:

the last time a dealer tried telling me I had a nail in the tyre and wanted £350 for a replacement... I told 'em to leave it alone.

turned out the nail hadnt actually penetrated the tyre at all, just the tread block....
