Been looking for a z for a while now and been offered one as my friend is having to get rid. Black 2.5, 18" elipsoids, red leather - no m seats. Been looking at getting the 3.0 - am i better waiting or should i get this one? Not sure on price yet but will be more than reasonable as he is a mate and needs shut for cash.

I know everyone will say get the 3.0 but like i said to u- drive both and decide if there is any real world dif 4 u! U know Kays car has been looked after!

Main thought at the moment is currently driving the 225bhp tt and want something that feels a bit quicker. Can the 2.5 be tuned up easily or is it best leaving it as is?

You basically wont be able to tune the 2.5 unless you put some kind of charger on it mate. Is it an 2.5SI or a 2.5i (post/pre facelift)?

If you want something that 'feels' much quicker than the TT youll 'need' a 3.0SI or an M. The torque of an NA six wont feel as quick really. A 2.5SI or a 3.0i will feel quite similar to yours at the top of the rev range, but obviously wont get that wind up surge of the turbo!

If you ever wanna try a 3.0i though mate, just drop me a message and nip down to Sheff one day, you're welcome to have a play! :)

My 2.5 (N52 engine) only produces 177 bhp. Your friend's 2.5 must be pre-facelift model (with 18" elipsoids). If you want something same as or faster than your TT, I think you have to get a 2.5si/3.0i/3.0si. My car can get to 62mph in 7.1 sec. Your TT can do better than that. Extra 50 bhp for a non-turbo car is not cheap and easy.

You need at least a 3.0 (231) for that, my mate had a 225 TT and compared to that there wasn't a great deal in it, 3.0 edges it though.

Cheers Ed - would be good to see how yours compares with mine. When you free? A straight drag would be good ( obviously only up to 30 though or 60 is we find a national sppe limit road).

after crusin wi ed up from the breakfast cub i dont think speed limits are a real worry!

Ian i would wait for a 3.0 :P Wether it be the 3.0i or 3.0si.

Your more than welcome to test my 3.0si (261bhp) too if you do come over to Sheffield. (That way you can decide on Coupe or Roadster too ;) ) But don't be scared of breaking the speed limit you big girl :D

I would say it depends on the age of the car, the pre-facelift 2.5 was 196 BHP and the 3.0 230 ish IIRC, the will be a difference but I'm not convinced it's as big a as people think most of the time in real world applications, however if you are talking post-facelift the difference is about 60 BHP which I think you would notice.

Absolutely no help at all, :D

One thing I'd say is that it depends which 225 TT you have - if it's the roadster (like I had before moving to the Z4) then both the 2.5 and the 3.0 feel quicker, with the latter being the most noticeable - I drove my mates 2.5 before getting my 3, and its a very different kind of power delivery and engine note, both nicer that the TT in my opinion.

If you've got the 225 TT Coupe, then I think you'd want to go for a 3 litre to really feel the difference in pace - hope that helps in some way.

Like others have said though, its probably best to try them both out and see what "feels" better for you :)

The extra 500cc aside, don't forget that the 3.0 came with more spec as standard, such as the ///M sport suspension and the more favoured silver headlights.

Generalisation of course, but the they also tended being the top of the range (exc. M's) to be better specced by customers. Sat Nav, heated seats, M seats and various toys. Those going for 2.5's were saving a little money.

I had a 2.5 roadster and loved it. Never regretted not getting the 3.0 as I couldn't really afford it at the time.

However, you would not be happy (IMO) with a 2.5 coming from a 225 TT. I came from a TTR150, so the 2.5 was a step up. But I feel you'd constantly think 'if only'.

Just my two penneth. To be honest - if you are interested in one you will find the right 3.0. Whatever you do, don't rush it. The 2.5 is a great car in its own right, but as I say, based on your current car, then 3.0 is the way to go.

Or an ///M.........

My 2.5i Z4 is the fastest BMW I have owned so far, but I really want something having sub-7 second ability (over 200bhp) and top speed limited to 155mph. :)

Hey! Thats original ! I never heard that one before..... I had 3 Boxsters before the Z and kept choosing them over 911 s because I wanted a rag top Porsche and did nt much care for the looks of the 911 cab. Poor mans Porsche ? I am well into the 40% tax bracket and as such probably pay more of my income into government coffers than a lot of 911 omners earn in a year
