2.5 Si Sport

I'm still searching for my Z4 but being up here in Lancashire there's not much for sale locally, they're mostly in the south. I really wanted a 3.0 Litre but a nice looking 2.5 Si Sport has just appeared not too far away. It's a nice low miler with a good history.

Does anyone own or have any opinions of the 2.5 Sport that may help me make a decision? I'd be grateful for any input.

I've had my 2.5Si since May and love it, the right amount of power when you need it and quite economic; recommended but who ever bought mine originally must have been a scin flint as the only extra is heated seats!

Thanks, much appreciated. Have you had any issues with it as yet? The one I'm going to see has all the whistles and bells - M seats, two tone and Wheel, lower suspension and the "sport" button. I've not really dome any research as to the 2.5 engine but motoring press reviews seem to like it a lot. Does it use a bit of oil like the 3.0 litre one does?

Oddly it attracts a higher insurance than the 3.0 and the 3.0 is the same, if not slightly more economical to run.

The Si is better than the standard 2.5 Sport though so if you've found a good one with a decent spec it would be well worth considering.

Usual things to watch for but those aren't specific to the 2.5 Si. Have a look on the forum buying guide for things to look for.

If you dont mind me asking, what's the spec and price?

Dan.

I had a 2.5si Sport from 2007 until 2011. Basically picked it up new with 70 miles on the clock and put 27k on it. Loved the car and only replaced because I could with an ///M.

In daily life it's just as fast as a 3.0si depending on the driver  I used to ave a go with a coupe owner on the way home sometimes and neither of us could shake the other off.

Being the same engine as the 3.0si it shares the same faults, namely HVA issue. So make sure the see the car from stone cold and listen for tappety noise which should go within a couple of seconds.

No problems so far, fingers crossed. Did a thousand mile round trip to Devon (Suffolk) and back followed by a trip to york, roof down, lovely (wife wasn't impressed though :) )

Thanks for all the replies folks. I've been to look at this car this afternoon.

Dan it's a May 2007, 39k miles, Black. Full BMWSH. (he told me that, not seen it with my own eyes yet though) The runflats have been replaced with normal Potenzas, they're about 1/2 worn. Interior has the Sports (M) seats (manual) in two tone black and red leather, the dash has been professionally covered to match the seats, it has an M s/wheel and the "Sport button". Guy selling it is a dealer but it's his own personal car which he's had from 2008. I asked him if he was sellng it as a private sale or a trade, he said Trade - we'll see about that if go back. He says he only uses it mostly in the dry and it lives in a garage when not in use. Judging by the condition which very nice i believe it. Hood works fine - up and down very quickly and no signs of the car having ever lived outdoors. bodywork wise it's straight as a die, no evidence whatsoever of any accident damage, all paint looks original apart from the sill covers which have been re-painted - probably due to stone chips. Engine bay is clean but not "just washed" clean, with no trace of any oil leaks whatsoever. Underside it spotless, no signs of rust anywhere, coudn't see the gearbox properly but the diff is dry. All wheels are perfect but he has had them refurbed over 12 months ago. I forgot to check when it's next service was due but the MOT expires May 2015 Hes asking £10950 for it, I'm not going that far, it looks about £500 overpriced as a trade car, and a lot more over as a private sale

I've got a couple of others to go see, both 3.0 litre cars but I would consider this one at the right price I think. If he won't budge I would walk away though

Ive had a 2.5 for 12 months now. 124,000 miles. Goes like stink, never misses a beat and doesn't lose or burn any oil. I would like the 6th gear you get in a 3.0 but thats about the only issue I find. Love it !

Had my 2.5 (2007) sport since May, covered 6k with no issues (Touch Wood!) and love it. Plenty of grunt and admiring looks... :D :driving:

Hi, I have a 2007 2.5si, only had it 2 mths but love it  plenty quick enough for everyday driving! I'm getting good fuel in the high 20's with air con off, but roof has been down a awful lot lately  the tapping noise only really happens with short journeys so make sure you give it a good run out !

I will show some photos but having probs with photo bucket :x

If you need any info just ask! Good hunting

Here we go!

When I changed to my ///M my insurance dropped by 25%. A air few that have upgraded have also found this.

Seems strange to me though as 2.5si are probably a lot rarer, unless that's part of the reason.

You will have more comeback if it's a trade sale instead of private so I see no reason to tackle him on this.

Very happy with mine - coming up to the start of a 3rd year of ownership. Regularly averages 35mpg+ on a long trip and is plenty fast. I have driven the 3.0si coupe and roadster, and the 2.5si does not feel appreciably slower, particularly if you drive the way that gets the most smiles out of these engines, i.e. hang on to a gear and let the revs build and build. :driving:

BUT... you'd be silly to pick one over a 3.0si, if one is available in similar condition. Xenons are the thing I miss the most from mine and they are much more common on the 3.0si. As are heated electric seats, comfort pack, 10 speakers etc.

Electric seats are a waste of time though unless you have two regular drivers and need to adjust all the time. Just more weight and more to go wrong.

Yep, I agree. I retrofitted them mainly because I was bored. :D

What about Xenons? Worth holding out for?

Hi Dewi,

Welcome to he forum. I have had my 2006 2.5si since May and love it. No problems at all and sailed through the MOT. Just a word of caution, the price seems very high, even via a trader. I got mine for £6,800 with 53k miles with FSH (not all BMW though). The car has factory cruise, BT, heated seats, parking sensors, xenons, MFSW and a stainless steel aftermarket exhaust.

I appreciate I got mine cheap, it is a little older and has slightly higher mileage, but even so, £8,500 should be the max for the car you are looking at with a warranty or £7,800 private.

There are lots around (if you are prepared to travel - I live in Peterborough and got mine from Southampton) and with the Summer almost over prices are set to drop.

For the money he is asking you can just about afford a 2006 Z4M privately.

Hope this helps, James

Thanks James, yes you're right it is expensive and I knew that when I went to see it, but it is probably about the best you'll find, it's very nice. It's also has the dreaded springs replaced and it's on non run flats which would have been my first job if I got it. I'm not sure he'll come down to what I want to give him for it though but I can always walk away, and will if needs be. As you say there are plenty around to choose from. Unfortunately not many of them around here. I've earmarked a few more to go see over the weekend - all 3 litre cars apart from one more 2.5 Si Sport and I'm going to have to drive a fair way to see them. We'll get there in the end! :)

Dewi,
Mine also had the springs and all four tyres replaced with non run flats, only a few weeks old. Oh and a brand new roof motor :D and got mine for 7k. So even if it's showroom condition I wouldn't pay 3k more for it :o

Keep looking, and like said above summers nearly over so you should get some nice bargains about now!
