2.5 or 3.0?

I've test drove a lot of Z4's in the last week all were 2.5's although I want a 3.0.

I drove a 3.0 today and I never noticed the difference, it was a poor example but still felt I would have noticed the difference.

I drive a Golf R32 at the minute but the 3.0 felt a lot slower than the 2.5 I tried earlier in the week.

Anyone else felt there isn't much difference in power?

Nearly 40 BHP more for almost no weight increase has to make a significant difference.

Are you sure the handbrake wasn't on? :poke:

Alzay, I test drove both the 2.5 and 3.0 before I brought one, I brought the 3.0, It did feel like it had more power, the engine felt like it wanted to rev for longer.

There is little or no benefit in the fuel consumption and the insurance was not that different for the 3.0

Personally it was the 3.0 or nothing for me :)

There are 3 different 2.5 engines, and 2 different 3.0 engines (I think that's correct) - all with different power outputs.
What age of car are you looking at? You mentioned it was a poor example - in what way? if it's been neglected, there is a good chance you drove with an engine which could be significantly down on power. If you say you want a 3.0, try driving one that is more like the car you actually want to buy. It's good to compare options, but there's little point driving all the alternatives if you're not going to test one you'll actually be serious about.

For me i was getting desparate in my search for a 3 litre Z4, but i held out till i found one. I also considered the 2.5 but to be honest i know i wouldn't have been happy with it, I spent a few £'s replacing bits to get it running perfect.

I even travelled 200 miles to get mine, i do miss my E60 i traded for it esp now we are getting in to winter. I dont miss the sensitive remote key that would open the windows and the boot when bend down to tie my laces getting out the car  .

3ltr has a 6 speed box too, thats enough for me  And the 3ltr you tried must have been in limp mode (faulty basically). You can definitely notice the difference, unless it was the newer 214bhp si 2.5, but even that you would notice an increase.

Hows the R32? I was looking at one before my Z

The car I tested today was in edinburgh only 40000 miles but clearly clocked. The last MOT it needed new brake pipes, disks pads and tyres all round, it had a lot of dings in the body too.

Shame as it was the right colour but just wasn't right. Salesman was a joker too.

Dodgy dealer?

Umm thought they would have sorted the brake pipes out, as that was a common one on the E46.

BMW's are quite difficult to alter the mileage, as its stored in 3 places, and all have to be within a tolerance not to illuminate the tamper light on the dash. And if you are unsure walk away, loads out there

Did you search AUC? There are few roadster around £10k. Don't buy from independent dealers.

That looks like a great deal, esp. for AUC and with the m-sport seats, quite rare on an early car.

I use to have a 2.5 (190hp) and now have a 3.0si (260hp) and there is a huge difference between these engines in torque and top end power but i'm not sure how different a 3.0 (230hp) will feel compared to a 2.5 (190hp). You should still get a noticeable difference in low end torque which should be obvious, plus it has a 6 speed box.

When i got my 2.5 I loved it but always wished i had got a 3.0, the trouble is there are loads more 2.5's than 3.0's around.

Before i bought my 3.0 i had only test driven a couple of 2.5's..... but i certainly noticed the power difference between the two.. especially the low down torque on the 3.0.... you can almost drive the 3.0 as an auto and leave it in 3rd; from close to standstill upto 70mph!

The 3 litre and the 2.5 are the same block and bore size, the 3litre is just a longer stroke than the 2.5 so you will notice the power difference low down and high up, the middle bit will be pretty much the same.
