2.5 or 3.0?

Hello there!

I've bought my 3.0 (2003) Zed around a year ago, and now I'm having some doubts about. Based on VIN (and on it's papers) it should be 3.0, however -now I am having a vacuum leak- I realized that the air intake (upper and lower boot) are from 2.5. ( What I am having : 13717514879 and 13547514880 instead of 13717514874 and 13547514867) How I can be certain that my car is not a 2.5 but a 3.0? What’s the easiest way to tell? I was thinking on the DISA valve size, but I don’t know it's a good approach or not?

Also my lower boot is broken, is the throttle body size the same for 2.5 and 3.0? Asking becuse of the gasket size

Thanks in advance,

incubus

Pop your registration into ECP, it'll tell you make/model/engine size etc

https://www.eurocarparts.com/

V5C should also tell you.

Let us know your findings

Interesting. Also be interested to know your findings.
Another quick check may be the sound generator? Not definite as some are retrofitted but originally only fitted to the 3.0i from BMW - could be a good quick indication imo.

Unfortunately I am from Hungary, so V5C and ECP is out of the case.

bmwvin.com says its 3.0, however the used car market in Hungary is deep mess and sadly I can imagine some fraud (e.g. motor swap after a crash).

And there is possibility for one of the previous owner changed the intake for 2.5 one accidentally (Although I don’t know if it's possible or not)

:D Well, that's definitely a good idea :D

I think I find what’s the problem. (And it was obviously me :P )

I made a picture of the leakage on the lower intake boot, and it clearly shows another hole for the sound generator. So, on the lower boot there are 5 holes (one for upper boot, one for throttle body, one for ICV, a small one and one for sound generator/if I am not mistaken/) on the 2.5 there’s only 4 hole (no one for sound generator). So, I am happy, case closed.

But, the picture on realoem.com are misleading, and not even close how the parts should look in real life ( I presume its because the same picture is used for all the m54 engine variants, no matter which type E46 or E85)

Thanks everyone,

incubus

Hi, is it a manual car?

2.5 (2003 for sure at least) only came with a 5 speed box, 3.0 came with 6.

VIN number decoded on any BMW VIN decoding sites will tell you too.

3.0 have the sound generator as well.

Hope you get your answer :)

Edit: Note to self, read replies before posting...

Things like sound generator can be retrofitted to any of the 6c engines, and I've read people with the 3.0 removing them so not a solid basis for a decision
