2.5 or 3.0 fuel consumption

Hi folks,

As has been mentioned in previous posts, be gentle as i'm new to Z4's :?
Been looking at the 2.5si Sport but after reading through the forum i may be persuaded to go for the 3.0 ?
My daily commute is only 50 miles round trip so not sure if there is any real saving to be had in buying the 2.5 and what differences can i expect between them if any with regards standard equipment ?
Can anyone tell me if there is any real difference in MPG ?

Im afraid I dont have any knowledge on those two power trains, however im sure there will be pleanty on here who do. :)
 
Hi Paul,

Can tell you I have averaged just under 33 mpg in my 3.0 over the last 4,000 miles. True mixed town and country from a 3.0 e85 .Never had the smaller engine size. Hope this helps.
 
I don't imagine you'll notice much difference in economy but quite a big difference in performance. What does the commute consist of? Town driving, nose to tail in a queue or quiet country roads?
My 3.0 coupe gets between 35-38 on a run at 70-80, 28 mixed town driving.
 
Thanks folks, mainly country roads with a little town driving so perhaps not as bad as i was led to believe ?

Which models are you looking at, specifically? 2.5si (facelift, i.e. 2006 onwards) vs 3.0 (pre-facelift) or 2.5si vs. 3.0si?

The latter is an easy choice if they are the same price/spec as the 3.0si is quicker and seems to get slightly better real-world fuel economy. 3.0si will generally have a slightly higher spec by default. 2.5si vs.the earlier 3.0 model is tricky; they are reasonably close in performance but the 2.5si will need to be revved a bit harder to keep up; the 3.0 will most likely have more gizmos but won't have the facelifted model's visual and mechanical tweaks; 3.0s are obviously also a bit older (and subsequently, cheaper) in general.

For what it's worth, I just did a 50 mile trip of motorway and A-roads (legal speeds, with a bit of town driving at each end) on a fresh tank of fuel and the OBC says 35.8mpg.

Looking at both 2.5si & 3.0si, 2006 onwards, so i presume from what your saying both models were facelifted at the same time ? Ok from what i can see the mileage achieved was from your 2.5si ?
If the fuel consumption is negligible between the two i'll have a look at the 3.0si also,

In 2006 the whole range was facelifted and there was a new engine line-up. BMW also introduced the coupe and M versions around this time.

I've got a feeling that the 3.0si will give you slightly better mpg, despite looking worse on paper. I can't get close to some of the 3.0si figures people post on here (e.g. 39/40 mpg for long journeys). 38mpg max, and that's driving like a total wuss.
 
The engine on the facelift is also lighter... Although the total overall weight of a facelift is heavier with insulation/ noise proofing added!

Performance wise i doubt you'd notice anything between the 2.5si and 3.0si unless driven back to back... But the spec on a 3.0 will prob be better.

Electric seats are usuful for more then one driver (with the memory function)

Mine is an early 3.0i (2003 model) with the 6-spd manual gearbox (does make a difference to the MPG over the other variants SMG, auto etc) and gets 32 for general driving, and around 40 on the motorway. I also looked at the 2.5 to start with, but the fact the MPG and insurance were hardly any different between the 2.5 and 3L, I decided to get the bigger engine (you also get a few more extras on the 3.0i).

I'm constantly amazed how good this car is on fuel (had an ST220 Mondeo Estate before that drunk fuel in comparison!! :wink: ).

Plenty of choice out there at the moment.

Morning everyone, bumping this thread up just to save on starting another on fuel consumption.

As you'll see i'm still a newby, had my 3.0i for around 2 months now, so had a good time to compare it against my previous motor, an MR2 1.8, with no mods. My regular day drive, too and from work, is a round trip of 15 miles, a mixture of free flowing 40mph zones, then slow traffic - takes me about 25mins. Over a month, i would average around 310 miles from a tank of fuel in the MR2, about 36mpg. Motorway driving, i was chuffed to get up to 400 miles from a tank.

By comparison i'm getting 31mpg from a daily drive in the 3.0i Zed, which i don't think is bad at all for stop/start travel. I checked out my average speed for the journey too, hovered around the 17-18mph mark. Not having looked at this before, i was actually a bit surprised by it. My top tip to myself after looking at this was "I might as well buy a bike and up my average speed to 25mph" :D

Overall, i'm well happy with the Zed, when it comes down to it, are we really bothered about the mpg? Definately NO! :driving:
 
my 2.5 SI returns 25mpg. Every time I reset it it averages back over time to 25mpg. There are long downhills that i can coast and reset the computer and get very high numbers, but over time it returns to 25 mpg.

I dont mind it, my 4.0 petrol Disco does slightly less so it feels like an economical choice

My pal has a 3.0 and it shows 30 mpg over the same time and similar miles and I think similar driving styles.

What style is that? I can get 25mpg from mine but only if I thrash it relentlessly on a cold day. Are you sure everything is ok, mechanically?

I've had my 3.0 coupe for about a week now, general mixed driving, being sensible nets me around the 29-30mpg. On the motorway 70-80 around the low 30's. The gf on the motorway was running at 38-39 on the way back from Kent on the weekend.

For a heavy car (heavier than my TVR) and a 3.0 engine I reckon that's pretty good. The GF gets a hire car each week, usually a 1.2-1.4 hatch back and on the run she's only getting mid 40's.

In my short ownership I have found that if you run above 3k rpm the fuel does go down quite quickly.
