2.5/3.0 E85 sub £4000

Hi all,

I'm after a 2.5/3.0 Z4, really not too fussed about mileage. More concerned about price, looking around £3500 mark, with maximum budget of £3800. Don't care really about colour, and also not too bothered about spec - I am kind of looking forward to adding bits (like cruise control etc...) to a car myself! Open to suggestions!

Due to insurance purposes (being 22), I really need a car that isn't heavily modified (just declaring suspension changes pushes my quotes up to £2000 per year!!!!).

Based in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, and willing to travel about 2 to 3 hours for the right car.

Many thanks.

P.S. If anyone thinks I'm being unrealistic with my expectations, please let me know!

You see really open to spec and mileage, colour etc, personally I think you should be ok finding a 2.5l with that budget, good luck with your search 👍

May I just ask given your flexibility on every other aspect why you are ruling out a 3.0?

My guess would be with your stated budget that you are looking at pre-facelift M54-engined cars.
If you want to do stuff yourself then you may find a 3.0 in your range, or very close to it.

No that's a very fair comment - I kind of just assumed a 3.0 would just be out of my budget to be honest!

If a 3.0 did pop up within my range, then I definitely would consider it. You have made me think though, I think I would actually take a facelift 2.5, over a pre-facelift 3.0, but that's just a hypothetical decision I've just made up in my head!

Well I think they'll be up-budget a bit, but also bear in mind the pre-facelift M54 2.5i is 192bhp, the facelift N52 2.5i is 177bhp and the N52 2.5si is 218bhp, so how much does the power matter?
For reference, an M54 3.0i is 231bhp and an N52 3.0si is 265bhp (I think?)

Thanks - all good info.

To be totally honest, no, power is not my main concern, which is partly why I am absolutely fine to settle with the 2.5 (although I don't want to go down to a 2.2).

And also part of the attraction for me of the facelift 2.5 (and I guess also any pre-facelift 3.0) is the 6 Speed gearbox. No genuine reason for that really, other than I just really like 6-speed manual gearboxes for some weird reason!?

OK, I'll keep my eyes open for you.

If you don't want to consider a 2.2i you probably wouldn't want a facelift 2.5i either!

But if you find a facelift 2.5Si Sport (rather than an SE) it will have the very desirable M-Sport seats.

Good luck with your search anyway.

There aren’t many facelifts in your price range but there are plenty of early 2.5 and some 3.0 pre facelift to choose from.

It may help if you said where you were located and how far you are prepared to travel.

Yeah, I certainly would take a 3.0 pre facelift, I'm really leaning towards that engine.

And yes, good point about location, I forgot about that. Will add now - thanks.

I was personally tempted by this one, but I would have to sell my own 2.5 which I’ve been “doing up” first. I don’t have room for three Zeds on the drive (I actually do, but it would mean the wife having to park on the road :tumbleweed: ).

Yes, I was also tempted, and did message the seller a bit, but unfortunately for insurance reasons, I'm looking for one without any modifications.

Declaring the suspension bits on that one put my quotes up to £2000 (I'm 22), from about £450 if unmodified!

This car is nothing to do with me but looks very well priced for the time of year….

Thanks both for the suggestions, much appreciated.

I had seen the eBay one - I did speak to the seller, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get there in time (he had someone coming to view the car that evening, well before I could have got there!).

The other one, posted on the forum here, I have spoken to the seller as well, from seeing the car on Facebook - discussions still ongoing :)

Thanks again for the heads up(s)!

I’ll be selling my MY 2004, 2.5 in a couple of weeks.

Sterling grey, with Aero front and rear bumpers, 90k ish miles.

I’ll do a proper advert in due course.

PM me if of any interest.

Mark
