2.3i oil usage

2000 miles since the car's last oil change and it's just asked for 1l of oil. No idea what the oil is that is in it, so it might be horseshit, but is 1l per 2000 miles normal??

I have a 35is, and it went from full to warning in 3000 miles from when I bought it used. I asked the dealer who then added 1l, and he said that usage up to 1l per 1000 miles is within specification. So normal I would say.

I've done another 3000 miles since then and the level has dropped one bar on the display.

At 50k mines doing about 1/2 litre at every 10k oil change I do.
Hardly bother to top up between changes.
Interesting though when I bought the car at 28k the exhaust tips were very sooty.
Hardly any soot since I run Mobil 1 oil.

Off course it depends if it was filled full at change, as bit of guess work.

There is an official BMW Customer statement somewhere on ISTA that quantifies what they think is acceptable.

From ISTA: Maximum permissible oil consumption for non M cars is 0.7l/1000km, for M cars 1.5l/1000km :o

Bugger me that sounds like a lot. Mine still reads full from a service 18 months ago (I've done 10000 miles since then).

Mine is a 23i. Last oil change over a year ago and as above over 10,000 miles. Still showing full. Never had an oil light warning and never topped it up. Cars has done 48,000 so far. So I would say something is amiss.

Only had to top up once between service intervals, around 8000 miles and the system asked for 1 litre of Castrol's finest.

Yeah it was full after the service. This was done as part of me picking the car up, so like I say, the oil they used could have been garbage. At some point I'll replace it with Castrol and then see how it goes.
